185 Rear Hitch

Postby PhilS » Fri Apr 15, 2011 9:24 am

I recently purchased a 1974 185 LoBoy and would like to put a rear hitch on it to disc my garden. Will a hitch from a 1967 154 LoBoy work?. The 154 hitch mounts at the top behind the seat and there isn't any mounting holes on the 185. Is there a way to make this work or do I need a different hitch?

I don't know what you are/were using for a drawbar on a 154. But something "at the top behind the seat" doesn't sound like the right thing and sounds dangerous. The standard fixed drawbar for the 154 and 185 are identical and look like the picture on the left of this page. You should be pulling with something that looks like it. You should not pull from anything shorter or higher on the tractor.

Philjoan,
It sounds like you are talking about the optional 3 Point Hitch. Most Numbered Series LoBoys (154, 185, 184) came with just a 'standard' type drawbar on the rear of the tractor. An option was the 3 point hitch. The 3 point hitch parts are interchangeable from the 154, 185 and 184. A MAJOR component to the system is the square 'box' that sits under the drive seat - this is what holds the third or upper point. The parts to add a 3 point hitch currently sell for about $700 on ebay. Another option for use with a tractor equipped with a 3 point hitch is the 'selector valve'. This is an optional valve that sticks up from the 'tunnel cove' to allow switching the hydraulics from the bottom belly cylinder to the rear 3 point cylinder and vise versa.

Attached is a schematic of the 3 point hitch parts and a picture of the parts.

I hope that this helps you, NJDale

"tunnel cove" is suppose to be "tunnel cover"

I've attached pictures of the hitch on the 154. Does it look like it will work on the 185? There is no rear hydraulic ram, instead there is a rod that extends from the rear on the drivers left to a bracket that attaches to the center ram.

Philjoan,
What you have pictured here is NOT a hitch for a number series lo-boy. That is a fast hitch from an International Cub Lo-boy, the predecessor to the 154. It will NOT work on a 154, 185, 184, number series lo-boy. You will need the 3-point hitch setup that Jim and NJDale provided above.

Good luck,
Bill

I think you are right, looks like the fast hitch on my LoBoy.
Looks like that one has been a bit hot, sure would like to find a seat
frame like that for my tractor.
Good luck with you hitch for the 154.
To soon old to late smart!
