My steering column seems quite loose and moves around a bit. Does anyone have a picture of the wear parts that would cause this condition ? I'm just full of questions today !!! Thanks

On an int154 cub loboy??

The upper bearing in the column? I haven't taken a closer look yet but i'm not sure if its a bearing or a plastic bushing sleeve used for a bearing. I know on the cub cadets we replace the plastic bushing with a real ball bearing. These bearings/sleeves seem to pop up too leaving lots of play in the steering shaft. I use loctite on them when i install them on the cadets.

If the whole column is loose, then the top support bracket is loose or broken inside the dashboard. I think there is a tac weld holding it in place.

My column sort of free floated and the grommet on the dash was rotted out. It wasn't just the grommet, the bracket holding the column to the body had a bad weld from PO and had broken free. Neighbor kid welded for me, he does good work!

So maybe yours is a bracket issue as well? Could be the upper bushing that I think was originally nylon. I've heard it can be up dated with the type wheel bearing you find on most riding mower front wheels!

Hope that is of some help!

My 154 also had a broken weld at the bracket. I put a good weld on it and it's held up for 10 years now. Must be a problem on a lot of them. Hamilton Bob would know.

Thanks for the info. I wanted to check before taking it apart to see if there was a common problem. I learn everyday it seems. Now at least I have an angle of attack !

I started taking my project int154 apart, i need to seperate the dash assembly from the steering column. Now when the tac welds are seperated i was think of using two muffler clamps when i reassembly it. I'm going with the standard steering box but with power steering added.

I had the same problem. The steering shaft is supposed to have some sort of sleeve or space that holds it in place by the outer housing. Mine was missing. Turns out the front wheel bearing from a 1250 tractor fits perfectly in the housing and the shaft diameter. The bearing may have a tendency to want to work it way out. I put a small hose clamp around the shaft and it's holding. But i would like to cut a groove and add a snap ring to do the job
