Adapt a Woods L59???

Postby fordyford » Tue Feb 07, 2012 12:18 am

Has anyone had any experience with adapting a Woods L59 from another make tractor to a 184 LoBoy, in lieu of its specific 59LB? Don't have a problem with fabricating brackets or welding. Curious if the L59's are the same basic mower assembly, but with different mounting points for each application. Rotation the same? THANKS!!

They are the same basic deck, but with different spindles that rotate in the opposite directions. You can either get the deck and swap the spindles/blades with those from a regular 59, or put a twist in the belt so that the blades rotate and cut in the proper direction.
If it were me, I believe I'd hold off a bit and look for a deck that didn't require modifications or crafty ingenuity to get it to work. Come spring time they will surface!

Thanks for the advice. I would presume that's because of the opposite rotation of the IH PTO.
What direction should the blades rotate, looking down at the deck from above? I've confused myself!!

I have a 59LB I've had in the for sale section several times with no takers at $400.00 in excellent shape. (Shameless Plug)

Well I sort of did the opposite, as already mentioned the decks are pretty much the same, just various hangers and the mule-drives are different. The '50 Cub I bought came with various implements, and one was a woods 59" mower, but it wasn't attached to the tractor. After starting the re-fab I realized that mower deck wouldn’t have ever been attached as it has the hangers for either a 154/185/184 series or perhaps another brand of tractor.

I ended up getting all the proper mounting hardware from Ralph and on eBay and such and converted it to attach to a standard F-Cub.

I "Might" still have some of the previous parts laying around, I'll check and if I find them I can post/send some pics of them and see if they are what are needed to attach to a 1854 series?

One thing to watch on the deck is the actual spindle belt pulley diameter. Woods made the same 59" deck for nearly every tractor in production, but a big difference between them all is the size of the pulley used on the PTO and the size of pulley used on the spindles. One of the tractors (Ford I think) had a huge PTO pulley, about 16-inches in dimeter. Most others use a PTO pulley about 6-inches or 8-inches in diameter, even though they all use a pto speed of 540 RPM. The different PTO pulleys have to be mated to different spindle pulleys to get the correct blade speed.

I uploaded 3 pics to my gallery on the PhotoHost, the name of the folder is: "Mower brackets & Mule drive". You can look at them, as well as others, as they may be able to comment on what tractor they are meant to be used on.

I'm not sure what application the mule drive assembly is for, but I think the rear hangers are for a number series lowboy?
