First I would like to thank all of you for the replys. Got to working on it again. I think I might of found the cause of the problem. When I was taking the rockershaft out I noticed the nut on the down stop lever worn.put he pieces back together on bench and found the nut pushing on the rockershat bolt. It actually bent the rockershaft bolt causing the bearing to break. Next question is the ram over extending?

Pat, the only stop on mine is on the outside rail that limits the retraction of the cylinder. The retraction is done by gravity. Unless you have a stop that limits the length of the cylinder that mine doesn't have, I don't see how that could have broke it.

Tom, That is the stop I am talking about. the first pic is with the ram fully extended. you can see the nut on that stop pushing on the cap bolt. on the 2nd pic the ram is retracted you can see nut smashed from hitting cap bolt.

Pat, you must have had your adjustment screw way too far in. Mine has only 4-5 threads showing at the bottom of that threaded block, and any attachment I've ever had on it that adjustment I have at works just fine. Yours must have been adjusted way down. If you can repair it with just bolt on parts, you should be good to go. Next time keep an eye on things as you move the cylinder.

Tom, do you have time to take a pic of ram fully extended to see how much clearance you have between cap bolt and nut on stop lever? Thanks

Pat, I took some pictures to show you how mine is set up. The spring in the pic is just something I added to help the ram go in. The ram goes out with hydraulics, comes in by gravity or the attachment. In my case I have a snow plow on right now.

Pat, You and I must have been typing at the same time. The stop only comes into play when the ram is retracted, by weight. When I had a mower on my 154, that was how I set the height of the deck. Right now with a snow plow on, that stop doesn't come near the bolt. Right now with my plow raised the whole cylinder measures 16 7/8 inches. with the plow down the whole cylinder measures 15 1/8 inches. With my plow on, the stop doesen't come near anything with it up or down. If I put my mower on, it would hit the stop at a pre dertimed spot to regulate how high I wanted the grass to be. I hope this all makes sense to you, 'cause I'm getting confused now!

Pat, I think you just found your problem. I guess all this banter back and forth paid off. The nut IS hitting the ram. You may have saved me a few parts. The nut on mine is a little mashed, but not bad. With my mower on, the ram never went that far, now with a snow plow on, it hits that nut, but just barely.

sorry Tom not trying to confuse you.I was talking about the bolts that attach the lever to the rocker shaft.found a pic during cleaing parts. looks like I got the nuts on the wrong side. lol guess Iwas typing same time as you were now.

You were'nt confusing me Pat, I was confusing myself. Do you have it figured out now?

Oh darn what did I do now? extended the ram to measure the ram to see if it was 16 7/8 inches like Tom's. Pow took off like a rocket. is the ring that came out with it to be attatched to the end of the ram to stop travel?

I've never had one apart before. I think Rudi has some 154 info in his manuals section.

Pat, In Rudi's manuals under numbered series loboys, on page 9 is a blow up view of your cylinder. My service manual gets more specific, if you don't have one, now would be a good time. I'm not trying to be a smart guy, but the first things I bought for my tractors was owners and service manuals. They pay for themselvs pretty fast.

Tom, Thanks for reminding me I do have the orignal manuals that came with with tractor when I bought it. If you have same manuals as I do there are 2 different cylinders ref. pg. 9-8 & 9-9. the one I have is on page 9-8. I see now that the ring that flew out with the ram is the retaining ring. (looks like fun to get back in where it goes) You can look down the cylinder and see the cylinder is a little wider about a third of the way down. I guess to stop the cylinder from over extending. If I remember correctly when i bought it it did'nt have as much travel as it had now. I think it a good call to say the cylinder is the cause of all my problems.

PS did you look a page 9-11? (the nuts are on the outside of the stop lever)
also if it was'nt for you saying what the ram lenght was I'd probably would not have extended mine to check and would still be having problems. Thanks Tom!
