What clutch kit for a 184?

I just purchased a 184 in need of a clutch. I believe the pressure plate is broke. Its not tore down yet. If you press in the clutch, it does nothing. Can anyone give me advice of what clutch kit to buy, and or what NOT to buy? I simply want quality in right the first time and the only time. Thanks in advance.

I would take off the inspection plate (if it's still there) under the bellhousing, grab a flashlight and take a look and see if you can see a problem first.

Before buying parts, find out what is wrong. Parts are readily available at dealer or from HamiltonBobsCubs. Diagnose with the engine off.
1) Look under the tractor behind the flywheel. See if the shift fork moves the throwout bearing forward and back when the clutch is depressed. The throwout bearing may just have turned in the forks.
2) Put the tractor in neutral. With the shifter in neutral, try to turn the drive shaft by hand. (with no tools) It should not turn. If it does turn, plan on digging deeper up by the clutch.
If it doesn't turn, depress the clutch and repeat #2. This time it should turn. If the clutch appears to work, your issue is likely the key by the u-joint or in the transmission.

Thanks outdoorsguy! You nailed it.

The throwout bearing does twist in the clutch fork. I finally seen more of it as I removed the right side cover. I only had the left side off at the time. So I took a heavy screwdriver and a mid size pry bar and put it back in place and it kept throwing back out. As I was looking at it closer, the previous owner had the clutch over adjusted. I lightened it and it holds in a lot better but still not that good. The fork its self seems like its week meaning; it wants to spread apart when pressure is applied. Along with that, the bearing housing seems warn like but not too sure because I don't know what a perfect one looks like. Along with what else I noticed, the universal on the driveshaft that goes to the transmission is on the transmission shaft somewhat loose. Like it might need another set screw or key on the shaft. I also noticed that it has some blue paint on it so I wonder if its right. I'm done looking at it today. Its 97 deg. Thanks again everyone!

Boy do I feel like a pinhead. I tell the guy to remove his cover on the bellhousing (there is none) and I own a 154 so I should know better. Can I use Temp of 103 as an excuse?

The shift fork and the throwout bearing have worn. The fork's inside is worn and the throwout bearing carrier is worn. These can be welded and then filed back into shape (rectangular). I opted to replace the throwout bearing & carrier (plan to open wallet wide) and weld the fork. You will need to pull the driveshaft and U-Joint to access the throwout. While there inspect the keys by the U-Joint.
As for the U-Joint carrier, there are only two points where the set screws contact so this carrier never really runs true. Check the U-Joint itself for slop. New replacements are available from NAPA. (cheap and easy fix if needed)

That was my thought too outdoorsguy. Get some casting rod and build up the badly warn spots, then use a grinder to clean and true it up ( I don't have the patience for too much filing). Then do the same for the fork. I hope I can weld the retainer and not warp it too bad so bearing replacement is good. I called HameltonBob and they told me that they don't have any "made yet"! About a month to a month and a half and that didn't seem too promising. I did do more searching for one. I believe I got a part number of 117244C2. That was a wide wallet site to see of $180.00 with out a bearing.

About the drive shaft, You quote "As for the U-Joint carrier, there are only two points where the set screws contact so this carrier never really runs true." Usually I see the set screws are like 12 and 3 O'clock on the yoke. Their I understand as it usually never runs "true" as it gets tighten on only 2 of the 4 sides. But you say carrier. To you, is the carrier what the spines are grooved in and attached to the yoke? Or like a carrier bearing that is to be mounted about half way between and possible missing? But seems like it should have one anyway.

Also...How much thrust play in the input shaft of the transmission is common or normal?

I do badly need a service manual. Its on the list for sure. Thanks again everyone!

That $180.00 from the dealer buys both the throwout bearing and the carrier. It comes fully assembled.

Perhaps 'Yoke' is a better term for the pieces the U-Joint attaches to. The set screws are as you described, 12:00 and 3:00. There should be no slop. The yoke attaches to the driveshaft and the transmission with a keyway (tight fit) and the U-Joint starts out tight and gets sloppier over time. If the transmission is in gear and the clutch is depressed, the only slop you should notice is gear lash. (extremely little)
Here is the NAPA replacement part number for the Universal Joint - P338

Sure wish that this tractor had a second U-Joint to join the engine and transmission. Guess a carrier bearing would be required behind the throwout.

I see that now. We finally got it in the garage last night and removed the shaft and retainer. I think its gonna get welded. I need to get some casting rod yet to do the repair. I replaced the U-joint bearing in the shaft. I don't know how lucky I was to have a spare one around for something else. I just finished pressure washing the grease and oil off the thing, and its drip drying now. Now I can find more leaks and ect. I already found some more welding to get done. Then I'm moving to the mower deck.

BTW, Are you saying that their should be "NO" thrust play in the transmission inputshaft?

I can't give a number, there are too many variables.
Mine (having the creeper option) will barely move - just enough to feel - with the clutch depressed and the transmission in gear.
I would expect that a tractor without this option may have even less slop (since there are less gears to mesh) at the transmission input shaft.

This one has roughly 1/16" of play. I also noticed the splines in the clutch its self are poor. Now on to the mower deck. It needs blades, belts, and some patching.

I think I removed the belt numbers with the pressure washer degreasing the thing. Anyone have a part# Or the size of the belt handy? A good belt to buy and not to buy? If not, I'll size it up or research it. Thanks again everyone!

EDIT: Its a IH 60" deck.

If you have the "60 inch rotary mower" the main belt is 492102R1 and the deck belt is 492103R1. However, there are several other 60 inch wide mower models, I think including all of 3160, 3160A and 3260. They use different belts. If you aren't sure which model you have, check the parts catalog for the deck illustrations. I think there are distinct features of each one.

If you don't have access to a parts catalog, Cub Cadet has it online. On this page,
http://www.cubcadet.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/category2_10051_14101_1100505_1100505_1100505_-1_image
put in 184 for the model number. Select assembly for your tractor and the mowers will be listed under "attachments".

If the splines on the clutch are in poor condition, then the driveshaft is probably also in a poor condition.
You may want to address issues one (or two) at a time. I did the "replace all" method and got a good lesson in troubleshooting.

Needless to say, I can now swap a clutch in a 184 and have it back mowing again in 2.5 hours. You don't want to get that practiced at it.

I sent you a pm, that impresses me if I can pull it off in 2.5 hrs, I'd be happy as can be if it comes to that.
