So I just overhauled the motor in my 184 and changed the oil, I saw all the specs that IH recommended anywhere from SAE30 to straight 10w oil depending on outside temps with low ash recommended, now the only place that sells low ash around here is the airport for planes, currently I put 10w 30 in it with a bottle of zddp additive, and saw in the manual that the footnote said dont sub 10w 30 for 10w??? anyway, what weight oil do you guys run in your low boy's?????????
I run straight 30w in the summer and 10w30 in the winter on my plow tractor.

I run 30wt all year long. Nice thing about 30wt is that it is shared by many of your typical yard machines - so you can save some coin by using the same oil in all your outdoor equipment. Some folks use whatever they use in their car or truck, but I prefer the 30wt.

I had talked to Joe at Hamilton Bobs and he said Bob uses 10w30. I just changed my oil with some 10w30 Mobil Super and about 1/3 to 1/2 of bottle of Lucas Oil Stabilizer. Not sure if the old Oil was just that bad or what but it seems to Idle a little smoother. Its hard to say when the last time the Oil was changed as it was fairly dark
I use the Mobil Delvac 15/40wt all summer in my fcub/154cubs. In my winter snowplow 154 cub i use 10/30wt in the winter. In my cub cadets in the summertime i use the 30wt and for the winter a 10/30wt or 10/40wt is required. You can also follow the owners manual too. I did notice with the air cooled cub cadet engines they use oil in the hotter weather/summertime when i tried 10/30wt or 10/40wt oil. I switched to the straight 30wt in the summertime and they used no oil at all. Plus there oil cooled too so the thicker oil will probably cool it better too. Walmart had the 30wt motor oil. The owners manual does suggest using the 5/30wt in extreme cold temps. Using a lighter oil weight allows the oil flow to get to the crankshaft, thru the oil filter and thru the oil system much faster. If the engine is running with no oil flow in the system yet you know what that means. Plus there is a big difference when a machine is kept inside and when its stored outside. Leave a quart of 30wt oil outside in the cold temps with a quart of 10/30 or 5/30 overnight and try to pour them in the morning.
I'm technically misunderstood at times i guess its been this way my whole life so why should it change now.
