Need help-I have a 184 model Low Boy Tractor. How do you get the hood off? Does it come off the same as a 154?
Thank you so much!!!!

Yes.

Edit: Click on manuals, top of page, large selection, free down load. Including the Operator's Manual for the 184 and 154. Link to 184 manual below.

If you are planning on working on your own tractors, a operator's manual, parts manual and service manual will be very helpful.

Maybe it is a blessing to not be able to take the hood off. (Learn from others' mistakes) :sick:

1) Remove Gas Cap and Radiator Cap
2) Replace all components under gas cap and radiator cap or put gas cap and radiator cap on new tractor
3) Enjoy seat time :||):

To answer your question, it is the same as the 154.

Just another one of the poor(?) design features on this model, as I've come to learn. PITA!!

Remove the four shouldered bolts at each corner, remove the gas cap and rubber splash collar,
and set (or throw) hood on the ground as your mood dictates. Make SURE that proper wrench is under the seat, when this operation is required down the hill and a mile from the shop. :roll: :lol:

I'm considering some kind of mod to a hinged one side affair with quick release on one side.

I agree it's a serious design flaw. I just had to pull the hood to get to the air box so I could spray in ether to get it started. It's a pita, but I've replaced the bolts and they come off easily with a creasant wrench, which I keep under the seat.

Actually, there's not really many reasons you should be taking the hood off if you have a decent running tractor, so the design is just fine. If you have to spray ether in the air intake, which I would NOT recommend, you could have just pulled the rubber air intake hose off of the carb and had better results with your ether spraying it directly into the carb. Oh, and if you're needing to spray ether into the tractor to get it started, you should probably take the hood off and do a tune-up anyway, however, you can do a complete tune up on a Lo boy WITHOUT taking off the hood!

The original farmall Cub and Lo Boy tractors did not have a removable hood at all. The only thing you absolutely have to take the hood off of a number series is to replace or clean the air filter, so that's maybe once a year. There's really no other reason. You can easily change the spark plugs from the side of the engine, just like on a Cub, points, condenser, distributor cap, rotor, all from the other side. Other than the air filter, there's nothing under the hood that you need to access, so removing 4 bolts and the rubber boot is a pretty simple process.

Agree with Gitractorman. Of the 5 tractors I own, the hood on the 154 Cub Low-boy is the easiest and fastest to remove. 2 or 3 minute job to remove or install. Now if we want to talk about accessing the electrical wiring behind the dash - that is a major undertaking.

Not to pile on, but if you find taking off the hood to be a problem you're probably over your head when you get it off. The air filter lasts a LONG time and you can do a full tune-up without removing it. Love my 184 and it's 3 point.
