new lowboy ower here

Postby hdbooner53 » Tue Feb 24, 2015 10:59 am

I been looking and found a IH 184 lowboy, with mower,3pt hitch, and 1050a loader, I've been looking quit a while and jumped on it, I wondering if there is a syn oil that can be used in the engine, it starts but very slow at -20 degrees, hope to be able to use a muti grade oil, thanks

You can pretty much use any oil you want in a cub. Some folks run Synthetic all the time, some just switch to 10w-30 or 5w-30 in the winter, but stick with a non-detergent oil. The engine really won't care what oil you're using, as long as it has oil in it. You may experience some leaking if you switch to a synthetic oil after running lo-ash 30w oil for 40 years in that engine, as the synthetic oils are much finer than the old straight 30w, and may leak at the old seals and gaskets.

Welcome to the Forum. In the tool bar above you can find a few manuals for the 184. Let us know if you can be of any help.

I wouldn't use synthetic oil because of the cost and the potential that the engine oil seals would leak.

Owning 5 tractors, I purchase oil in case lots, same multi-weight oil in all tractors year around. If I need to top off the crankcase, case of oil sitting on the shop shelf. No guessing as to brand or weight.
I have an excuse. CRS.

I agree with Eugene!---the "modern" oils were not intended for use in 60 or 70 year old engine, no matter what color they are. thanks; sonny

If you decide to split the tractor and replace the rear main seal, do some research on what will work successfully. The OEM seal retainer needs to be modified to be successful.

It won't stop. Very common issue with the C-60 engine, and probably any engine 40+ years old. If it's just a drip every now and then, I'd let it go for a while. It won't hurt anything, other than being annoying.

well I finished changing the rear oil seal, it took me three times longer than normal, hand aren't as nimble as they used to be, quite the job, I think next time it will be done by someone else, that has good hands that work better, fortunately I don't have any leaks, replaced the two mower belts while I was there as well as rebuilt the carburetor, the only bad problem is hands don't work that well anymore, but wife says that guy I claim she sleeps with ( arthritis) must or did something with me too
