changed rear engine main seal

Postby hdbooner53 » Tue Apr 21, 2015 6:01 pm

I had to change the rear main seal, so I pulled the engine and the rear plate and found that the seal was turning with the crank, so I replaced the plate and put in the new seal, and it seated, the old plate was warn out, I found one like new, and it measure a lot smaller, any ways its working well now, I also changed the pto belts while I had it apart, I got it up and running now, with no leaks yet, got about 5 hours on it, so far so good, do those  seal plates wear like that a lot, or am I just special

You mentioned there was a noticeable difference in the size, I wonder if it may have been replaced with one of the modified ones at some point in the past.

you are part of the problem!!!

I don't know if it was the modified or not, I was able to put it the late model seal, the seal fit a lot tighter, and I still don't have a leak, knock on wood

I have my 154 Lo Boy apart right now, same seal issue. This is not a show machine, it mows 4 acres and will be needed again in about a week's time. This problem appears to related to a machining issue with the housing. Timken's bore size when using a #355526 seal is 3.876 inches, mine measures 3.886 and looks to still have machining marks in the bore. IH did something in the past related to this seal? Were the running a proprietary seal? The replacement housing is a P/N 251363 R21, does anyone know what the bore size actually is on this revision. Did IH revise the part due the a seal being taken out of production? The nominal press fit on this diameter seal should be .011 It is not possible to purchase a seal with the correct OD for this size housing. If Rick Prentice is still reading these forums... are you boring out housings to next oversize? I saw a reference to this last night and now I can't find it. I think a #455509 Timken seal could be used if the housing was machined to a 3.936 ID. Is anyone fully addressed this issue?
