'76 Cub Lo-Boy 185 - Throttle Cable

Postby sanderson34 » Wed Nov 04, 2015 5:16 pm

Hello,

I have replaced my throttle cable and lever. Brand new one. The old one shorted out the ignition switch and burned right through it. Anyhow-

The lever will not stay open or closed. It will creep back down or back up. It feels like it is stretching.

I followed all adjustment procedures in the service manual. As well as Carb to Governor adjustments as per several Cub Lo-Boy owners mentioned online.

Does anyone know if the cable is supposed to be routed a certain way? I have it going from the Handle Mount at the dash, over the hydraulic lift bar/arm?, to the First Bracket on the Engine Head, to the Engine block bracket, then to the swivel pin.

The cable twists, bends, tightens, goes slack when the handle lever is moved. The slack or twisting is what's causing the limited range of the lever.

Is there supposed to be another cable mount? Is this movement typical?

Thanks All.

The described movement is not typical. The throttle lever position should remain stable as well as engine rpms.

I will have to check the throttle cable installation on my 154. But that will be in a couple of days.

Just a thought. Remove the hood. Soak all governor locations where shafts meet castings. You can also get someone to operate the throttle lever while you observe the cable action.

Had a similar problem where the throttle lever moved but the engine rpms did not change. Freeing up the governor solved the problem.
I have an excuse. CRS.

I had the same problem on my 154. You can tighten the bottom bolt on the throttle lever to make it stay put. It's a little harder to move, but easy enough.

Oh my!

Thanks for your suggestions! I am definitely going to check the throttle handles tension.

Eugene:
If you could get a photo of how your cable's routed and mounted. I would love that!

For that matter -if anyone can provide a drawing or a photo of their throttle cable routing would be awesome!!

Thanks Everyone!!!!!

Eugene:

You say to soak the governor / parts. Are you referring to Penetration Lubricant?

The governor spring lever part #11 must pivot freely on the shaft part #12 or the throttle will not work correctly. Just be aware that the lever is cast and fragile so if you hit it with something you run the risk of breaking it. Lube all the external moving parts and connection points. Click on the picture makes it larger. Stan

A spray solvent such as CRC, PB blaster, etc., to loosen up binding, sticking, parts. Then a lubricant as Stan mentioned.
