Lo boy 185 pto belts r&r

Postby Brianleibo » Thu May 05, 2016 8:07 am

Hi guys my name is Brian and I just bought a 185 i would like to inquire about the easiest way to replace the pto belts on a 185 lo boy. The last time I was around a lo boy was in the early 80's my grandfather owned a 154. So far I love this tractor!

To replace the pto belts, you must disconnect the transmission drive shaft so that the belts can be slipped onto the flywheel pulleys.
To do this, remove the bolt from the forward end of the driveshaft that attaches it to the flywheel coupler. Then remove the four bolts that attach the coupler to the flywheel so that the coupler can be slid toward the rear of the tractor. It may be rusted stuck in place so use a penetrating oil and maybe sandpaper to smooth the shaft. It only has to move about 2 inches to allow enough room to slip the two pto belts onto the pulleys.
Good luck.

Thanks Charlie I'll give it a try I have two new belts and I just wasn't sure if that coupler would move back after disconnecting the pin and four bolts. Brian

Thanks again the belts are on, I was lucky and after taking the 4 bolts that hold the coupling on the shaft had enough play to squeeze the old and new belts by without having to remove pin.

Congrats on getting the new belts on. Keep them adjusted tightly and they will last for many years.
