LoBoy 154 - No Power

Postby sjm32157 » Mon May 16, 2016 7:15 pm

Got the 154 out of storage a few weeks ago. Cleaned the fuel strainer, carb main jet, lubricated all of the throttle and governor linkages, tightened belts, etc. The tractor starts on the first crank with about 3/4 choke and never misses or sputters once it is warmed up. No blue, black or white smoke from the exhaust. It has the 3160 mower deck. I live on a moderate hill and I can't mow uphill in 1st gear. Tractor just runs out of power. Time for a tune-up or is the 5 foot deck too much for the 154? Seems to run great, just struggles in the moderate height grass.

Start with a complete engine tune up, including compression tests.

Moderate height grass? My 154 struggles with grass around 18" to 24" tall. Some grass types are harder/tougher to cut than others.

My guess, a complete tune up with accurate ignition timing will improve the tractor's performance.
I have an excuse. CRS.

18 inch high grass? My 154 won't mow grass that is 3 or 4 inches high. Hope a tuneup helps.

A 154 should have no issue mowing its way up a hill in first gear.
Something is wrong with it.

Replaced spark plugs, points, condenser, plug wires, distributor cap and rotor. Plugs were old and gapped .040 - .050. They were a normal brown color and not saturated in oil which was good to see. Didn't have a chance to adjust timing but will be doing that next. Gave the tractor a 5 minute test ride (in the rain). It starts up fine but now needs about 1/2 choke to stay running so it must be starving for fuel. Didn't require any choke before the tune-up but will check fuel flow. I'm considering taking the strainer off of the tank and replacing with a medium sized inline fuel filter.

Gave the cub a couple of doses of Berryman's fuel treatment and adjusted the timing to 16 degrees BTDC notch at high rpm. Where I had trouble mowing uphill in 1st gear it will do it in 2nd now. What a difference. I've only had the 154 for a year but this will definitely be part of my "routine" maintenance to keep her running good.
