154 LoBoy front tires

Postby bikers2435 » Thu Jun 09, 2016 8:53 pm

This 154 LoBoy I recently accuired has new 12 inch radial car tires on the front. They look great, decent looking match for the rear turf tires. But with 26 - 28 psi they "look" underinflated and steer hard. Would increasing the air pressure make it steer easier? Or should I just find proper bias ply tires? These proper tires are hard to find locally - would 4.00 - 12 trailer tires work?
Sorry for all the questions - just need some help.

Jack up the tractor with both front tires off the ground. Try the steering to see if the problem is the tires or in the steering.
I have an excuse. CRS.

Agree with Eugene, my 154 had the same issues with steering. It had been sitting for a long time. Cleanup and lubrication resolved that problem, I had to resort to disconnecting the steering linkage and work on a part of it at the time to free it up. To answer your questions (IMHO), yes they should steer better with higher pressure and 4.00 x 12 trailer tires will work as well. The trailer/auto tires might "cut" into the grass a bit more in a tight turn but over inflation helps some with that problem. Stan

If the problem is the tires, search the internet and determine which type front tire you want. Your local tire shops should be able to order them, or you can purchase off the internet.
