Charges only when blades off
My new issue seems to be no charge while mowing but charges when not mowing. Weak engine just enough to cause this or something I can adjust. The starter generator pulley seems to be correct and original but not 100% sure. Any ideas. Thx Brian

Tractor in shop, engine warmed up, 1/2 - 3/4 throttle, amp gauge showing charge. Engage pto/mower. Amp gauge showing?
Analog volt meter, check the voltage across the battery terminals. If showing more than 12.5 volts, probably good to go.
Check the starter/generator belt tension.

I have an excuse. CRS.

Is Engine running at full throttle with blades engaged?
with engine at full throttle blades off what is battery voltage?
engage blades what is voltage?
turn lights on. What is battery voltage?
turn off engine and feel temp of start/gen pulley. Is it very warm? If so belt slipping on pulley.

If it is the 185 mower,-- The pto clutch is mechanical , NOT electric!-- so that has nothing to do with charging.--- both my 185's and also my 154 are mechanical operated.
If its electric clutch then it's gotta be 184 mower.--OR somebody hacked in an electrical unit which could be shorted out. thanks; sonny

That is why I asked the model. The only effect possible from engaging the mower is if it slows the engine down. If it kicks out while mowing, maybe electrical parts are overheating. Maybe charge is just dropping off as the battery reaches full charge. Check voltages as already suggested.

Jim,--could a vibration or static interference have anything to do with it????--- just a wild suggestion.---engine speed loss would cause it, as you said! thanks; sonny

I suppose so. But it would be a long shot.

Re: Charges only when blades off
Well I cut my grass today and it was charging while running and when I engaged the pto it kept on charging. It does seem to stop charging at a certain point but will eventually kick back in. Not sure if that's normal. Over the summer I'm going to replace both battery wires with new as they are original so maybe they are also not allowing proper operation.

That's the way they s'posed to work!--you could have dirty regulator points or they might not be set quite right. thanks;' sonny

Normal operation of the ammeter goes somthing like this...... when starting the ammeter should show near max discharge. When engine starts and RPM goes over about 750 RPM the ammeter will show charging. Depending on the condition of the battery as the engine runs and the battery charges back up the ammeter will show 0 or close to it. If you turn on the lights it should momentairly show discharge and then back to 0. Once the battery is charged back up the ammeter will not show charging while running but will occasionally show charging then back to 0 if you have a mechanical voltage regulator.
