The Best Belly Mower

Postby JerseyLoBoy » Thu May 11, 2017 9:15 pm

Hey all! I purchased my 185 last year with everything except a mower. I am in the market for a mower and would like to know what the best option is.

My criteria would be: must be belly mower, must be a mower which was originally equipped to go under my 185, would prefer a deck that parts are still easy to buy new.

Thanks in advance.

Woods 59,--I got a half dozen of them ( every cub, and lo-boy 185/154 that I bought came with the woods 59).--Only use one on 185--6-speed . Just mowed the road ditch and yard today with it.---good dependable mower does a good job.--easy to grease and sharpen blades, only one bolt, (15/16 ) in center and can zip them off, sharpen them and zip them back on and be back to mowing in nuttin' flat. Woods dealers are all over and parts are just a phone call away.----Not like the 2 and 3 bolt other brand decks on the market. thanks; sonny

There are several discussions on mowers, mower types, and usage on this site.

Before you make a decision on which mower to purchase, suggest spending some time reading the posted discussions.

Parts availability. I own IH mower decks, Woods, and a Mott flail mower. Mower parts are available from your local auto parts store, local mower/tractor dealership, farm and ranch supply stores.
I have an excuse. CRS.

The 3160A mower deck is also a good quality (heavy duty) deck for lawn mowing purposes. Blade mounting is the same as the deck. One 15/16" bolt per blade. Also, the with the 3160A deck, it stays level at any height.
If you are looking for a brush hog type mower, then neither the Woods 59L or the 3160A would be a good deck for that purpose.

It will be strictly normal grass for me as I have a small 1 acre lot with my house on it.

I suggest the Woods L59. I have a 184 and mow a 1 acre lot and the L59 leaves the yard looking great! I also ran two different Cubs when I was growing up, both with the C3 mower, which is very similar to the L59 and they all did a great job. We mowed 4-5 acre fields every 3 weeks and the Cubs had the power to do that, so the L59, with the extra power from the 185 engine, should do very well.
