Try some Seafoam in the gas and oil before you commit to a rebuild. Run it hard for a while, see if the smoke decreases and then check compression wet and dry.

I'll do that! It starts right up with no issues. I've never had a tractor that starts as good as this one. I bump the starter and it pops right off. That's why part of me thinks it has good compression. Do these old motors have valve seals in them?

No, there are no valve seals.

Sounds like you got a nice deal. I would definitely hold off on the rebuild until you run the seafoam and check compression. There's quite a few threads on the forum that cover the why/how on these topics.

I would also add that rejetting the carb can make a big difference in smoking if the engine is running very rich.

Load those pics when you get a chance!

I was finally able to get some pictures! I did the sea foam trick and it helped it but not completely. I'm going to continue to run it hard and see if it gets any better. The one problem I do have is that I'm not entirely sure what deck i have. I believe it to be a 3160 deck but the numbers are gone. What differences can I look for to try to identify the deck? I was told that it's a 72 inch deck but of course I ran out of time to measure it before I had to leave for work again.

It looks like a 3160. I have a 3160A and mine looks different. A lot of people measure the deck end to end and claim it's 72" (which physically it is), but it has a 60" cut. There would have been a line on the discharge side marking the cut line, it should be about 12" in from the end of the discharge chute. I have a piece of tape on my deck where the cut line is since a PO painted the whole deck black. The inside of the front tire is a good guide for a little overlap.

Looks like a 3160A to me. Look and see if it has one mule drive belt and one deck spindle belt. If so it is 3160A. If it has one mule drive belt and 2 deck spindle belts it is a 3160.

Sounds great! I have my buddy going out tonight to tell me the belt situation. I still need to get some odds and ends for it this week so I can get the yard mowed before I go on vacation next week

Larry, were there different versions of the 3160A? Mine has a single wheel in front on the discharge side and gauge wheel on the back, not rollers in the front like the photos above. Mine matches this: http://www.messicks.com/cas/54168?secti ... 68_1288767

Before you make your final decision about a rebuild, run it this mowing season with Seafoam in the fuel and oil per the instructions on the can. You might be surprised, come this Fall.

There might be. I have a 3160A and it has the anti scalp rollers out front like OP pic but looking closer the mounting brackets are a little different. Online parts lists I Google show both. If I get a chance I will post a pic of my deck. Probably one of the more experienced members can enlighten us.

The verdict is.... it's a 3160A! Now I can get these damn belts ordered. I'm really enjoying this HamiltonBobs parts website. They probably get sick of seeing my name pop up every other day buying something else for the cub.
