185 starting problem.

Postby BNG54 » Fri May 19, 2017 12:09 pm

When I turn the key nothing hapoens. The amp guage needle moves a little. Sometimes everything works like it should and it starts right up. I am thinking loose connection, bad ground, dirty contacts or what else. The battery is charged, I cleaned and tightened the terminals, I replaced the solenoid, removed checked and cleaned the ignition switch and the plug. I don't know what to look for next. Any ideas?

Check for the battery grounded to a point on the frame rather than the sheet metal.

I have a good ground for the battery, directly to the frame cleaned to bare metal. I removed the starter/generator thinking that a brush may sticking. No problem there. I found 2 broken wires, repaired them, it started up, amp guage showed discharge. Shut it off, tried to start again, nothing.

I found the problem. A sticking neutral safety switch. WD 40 fixed it.
