Owners manual dealing with operation and basic maintenance as well as other info is available at the QUICK LINKS tab at the top left corner of this page, as free pdf downloads.

You need to figure out how the hydraulic system on your tractor operates before diagnosing repairs.

There are several different methods of operating and controlling the 154's hydraulic system. It all depends on how your particular system is equipped and works.

As Stan suggests, obtain the manuals for the tractor.

Describe what you mean by "hydraulic lift not operational". The cylinders are "one way", no down pressure so they will not move until sufficient weight/force is applied to the rockshaft to make them move. As Eugene suggested, figure out how the system works first.

I wouldn't drain the hydraulic system or change the filter until I knew how the hydraulic system for your tractor operates and diagnosed the problem(s). Depending on how your 154 hydraulic system is configured, it could take 7 and 2/3 quarts of hydraulic oil per fill.

We are talking many dollars that won't solve your problem.

Thanks guys. Actually the 154 doesn't take that much fluid - 7 quarts. so it's not an expensive proposition. no doubt needs to be done anyway from the appearance of the filter. the problem is the deck will not raise - I understand that it is a "one way" system. problem now is that I can't find a drain plug. find the filler and two plugs to check the final drive but don't find a drain. owners manual has an arrow pointing (generally) to an area but I see no plug there . surely one wouldn't have to remove the suction line to drain it. find nothing on the internet that is helpful.

Update: never did find the drain plug. used my vacuum to remove the fluid. put in New hydraulic fluid and new filter, deck lift works like a charm.

Operator's Manal, Lubrication Guide, paragraph 18, 19, & 20. Pictoral showing lubrication points, also located in the Lubrication Guide.
