Probably the most important thing you can do to help yourself or loved one durring a emergency is to make sure that your name, address is clearly posted and visible from the road. I've been a Deputy Sheriff and now a 911 Dispatcher and there's nothing more heartbreaking than to hear EMS struggling to find a address of someone who needs them.

In this area we have a fairly new E911 system. They STRONGLY suggest you put your house number in reflective numbers either on your house, or at the end of the driveway if house is not visible form the road. They suggest not putting your name there for privacy reasons

One thing that a local goverment did when they finally gave the county (re country) roads a name was to number each farm house the distance from the main county intersecting road in 1/100 of a mile. Ours is 65 so its 0.65 of a mile .

few years back Police and EMS were responding to a 911 call had a bad address with a house description that matched our house , we were not home the PD busted in threw our window went thru the house and the realized that the person in need was two houses down the street she died at the hospital heart attack. Minutes count post your address on the mail box and house........

I have been thier. It stinks. The fire department that I volunteer at in my home town sell's these address signs. The address numbers are on both sides & is reflective or you can put the numbers on one side. You can mount these on your mail box's. Up high to get away from the snow or flowers. We can put up to 5 numbers for your sign. This does help.

In rual Nebraska where I hunt they put up the street signs in compliance to the 911 emergency response, guess they are doing it everywhere. I was glad to see it, most folks know places by the owners, but if I was to see an accident or worse I would struggle giving an accurate location. But, it was kind of strange to go from a rual route # to a street name and number at my place, which has been in the family since early 40's.
