Stihl Gas Cap Recall

I got a notice the other day from Stihl telling me there was a possible recall on one of my yard tools. They sent me a list of what all was affected and I checked all the stihl stuff I have. My combination Edger/cultivator was on the list. I always liked this tool but I have begun to dislike it last few years because the cap became hard to put back on and it would sometimes pop off and spill fuel.

Now I know why! According to Stihl, "the levels of ethanol, aromatics or other additives in some gasoline sold in the United States may distort parts of the fuel cap, which could make caps more difficult to install and/or remove".

I bought mine new so I got my notice in the mail. I took it to our local dealer and it took him only a short minute to get the info, take off the old cap and put a new on on. Many of us like to hit the yard sales and swap meets looking for bargains. Who knows how many people got frustrated with their yard tool and decided to sell it at their yard sale. Some you guys may have gotten one of these at a sale and will not get a recall notice.

If you have been having problems with the fuel cap on any of your Stihl products check out the following site and see if yours is part of the program. http://www.stihlusa.com/recalls/recall_toolless_cap/

No sense in needlessly setting your pants on fire while trimming your hedges. What would the neighbors say?

I think if you have a stihl product you should take it by your dealer. If you bought it new you will get a recall on it, if it was bought used they have no way of knowing you have it. all but the newest models need to be replaced

That is exactly right. That's the purpose of my post. Many will not hear of the recall any other way. That is also why I included the link to Stihl's website. If your's falls into any of the listed categories then you need to take it in.

Keep in mind, many of the older models are not a part of the recall, only those with a cap that looks like this:

You won't have to go to your dealer with every tool to see if it is recalled, just the ones listed on their site with the above cap.

Bill:

Thanks for posting the recall. I checked and thankfully my cap is not affected. I have an FS-80 that I do not want to give up ever.
