Back in the days when the Farmall H, m, c, super A, cub, etc. were current machines for farming, the only place to get the correct size batteries was from an IH dealer. You could buy a car battery from the auto parts stores that was quite a bit cheaper, but it was about an inch or inch and a half taller than the original and there was not room for the battery box when they were slid in under the fuel tank. Due to price and availability it was common to see many tractors, including ours running around with no top on the box and the battery clearing the tank by less than an inch. One day our H landed upside down o the concrete floor of a trench silo. A neighbor was driving it and jumped clear so he was not injured, but when Dad got there there was gasoline all over the floor of the silo and the only thing between the steel gas tank and the battery posts was a layer of paint. When the tractor was back upright and the repairs made it also got the correct battery and the cover put back on.
