anyone have a 17 hmr rifle? i have a savage 17 hmr its a great gun to shoot especially at the squirrels or chippees that try to destroy my bird feeder!
i shot a turkey with it in the fall its dead on accurate i could shoot groups of 3 at 100 yards the size of a quarter!!!!
just wondering if anyone has one what have you shot? what round do you shoot? i've been using hornady 17 gr
hope to shoot a coyote with it one day but no luck yet

I also have a savage 17 hmr with a bull barrle. I shoot European Starling with the 17 out my bed room window. I want to get anothere 17 to take to my camp in maine.

Anyone done anything interesting with those 17HMR'S yet? Just bought an unfired Rem 597M in 17 haven't even sighted in yet.

I have the marlin model 17V with a swift 6X18 scope. Love it. Don't hardly use my 22 mag anymore. When a bird is hit with the 17 they actually explode into a big fluffball. Shoot a pepsi bottle filled with water and it's unreal the damage it will do. Also it will penetrate a 20lb propane bottle which surprised me. It will kill a deer,coyote,groundhog,turkey,pig,coon,possum, etc. (just take my word for it) The amazing thing is the bullet explodes (even in soft tissue) and leaves no evidence for tracing back to the gun. Surprised the anti-gunners haven't pushed that issue.
One thing that bothers me is the fact you can chamber a regular 22 cal shell in the chamber. Not sure what would happen if someone actually pulled the trigger.
I also have the Ruger 17 hmr new model single-six (first pistol on the market in 17 cal). I ordered it as soon as they first advertised it and it took over 6 months till I got it. I was also the 1st one to recieve it in Bedford county. (braggin rights) Havn't killed anything with it but does good plinking. My neighbor shoots better with it than I can
I also bought 2 bricks of the Hornady varmint experss with the v-max bullet (red tip). Also have a brick of the federal premium (black tip) Seems to work real well for me. Did I mention I love it Grump

i agree with Grump great gun shot alot of stuff with it so far.. I like to shoot chipmunks with it the farther the better like say about 85 yds. and they explode like a firecracker inside them usually these are the ones that attack my bird feeders.

Grump did you shoot a deer i would like to but didn't have a chance yet where would you shoot it in the head or heart or neck?

definitely a super accurate gun i only shoot the Hornady varmint express with the 17 gr. v-max bullet (red tip). think this is a great bullet would like to get the higher grain think there 20 something gr

Kevin, Deer can (has) been shot in the ear but right between the eyes works better. Tree stand is sweet.

most of the ammo I use is 17 gr 2550 fps. Remington has a fireball poly tip with 20 gr 4000 fps 20 rounds per box that sells for $25.50.

They also have a fireball jacketed hollow point with 25 gr at 3850 fps, 40 rd box that sells for $47.93 a box.

I would like to try the hollow points but at that price I can live with the 17 gr at around $10. a box of 50.

The hornady bricks I bought I got a real good deal with a guy that bought bulk and only paid $43.00 for each brick. $4.30 a box was good I think. Should have bought more but couldn't afford it at the time. Good luck Grump

Got my Rem 597 sighted in today, unbelievable accuracy 3 of the 5 3 shot groups were a ragged hole. Shoots better than my Savage 17 Mach 2. Can't wait for the Spring Starling migration

My son gave me a savage bolt action in 17hmr for fathers day. I put a very large/long scope on it and bore sighted it but i haven't shot it yet. I hope to sight it in soon.

Popularity of them seems to be dropping off in this area. Local sporting goods dealer I visit with on occasion says they can't sell them and people are starting to trade them back in. Most people after owning one a while are going back to .22 or up to .223

Wonder why? Gun shops here (Pa) locally can't seem to ever get any used ones. I was looking for one slightly abused so I could abuse it some more. Like leaving it behind the seat or in the garage. Grump

I think its the fouling in the smaller bore thats the problem. I believe it fouls way more than the 22's and sooner too. Thats the only rumors i have heard. I figure the fouling affects the accuracy.
