Thats it mak'em fat so they don't move as fast.My last place I live, she had dogs.I don't have dogs and I think the critters are going to be all over the garden.Nothing weapons can't handle.I eat lots of deer meat, been a long time since i've had cow.Thats why we have 22's to keep them out.Right now,I'm honing my mice skills and doing well.Think I going to try carrots and radishes this year.Been a long time since i've tried them.Tomatoes and beans are easy.Squash and zuccini are alaways good sellers.Hot pepper, mild banana and bell peppers do well also.I like giving strings of hot peppers away for Christmas.People love them[my buddies that like hot stuff]Cucumbers have not had much luck with, been to dry.Peas did realwell, still have 6 big bags frozen in freezer.Kevin

Up here on the coast of Massachussetts we are protected from the Atlantic by Cape Cod. The Gulf Stream and it's warm water keep the area pretty mild all winter long . It's 40 degrees now at 5:00. My rule of thumb is plant 1 week before memorial day. I plant tomatoes, squash (summer and winter varieties), pumpkins , peas, beans, eggplant, radish, cukes, peppers (lots of varieties) and califlower. This year I'm going try turnips, potatoes, kale and corn.
We can get three harvests if we coordinate things right. And this year I hope to get my pumpkins in a little earlier. I have to set up my planting calender a little better this year. I also don't have problems with deer for some reason. I raise sheep and have some good field fencing. So does my neighbor but every morning they're in his goat pastures. Same fencing, same woods across the street. My only problem is those squash and pumpkin bugs. They can be brutal. Great question and forum!!!
Not much land, so not a huge farmer...We only have 5 acres, and about 1/3 is forest or scub. I will be planting a large garden, with about 1/2 acre of corn. We will use it for feed, maybe flour, and let a steer or two clean it up. For the long term we are planting berries (straw, rasp, marion and boysen). Also have 55 apple trees on the way and 6 peaches in the ground.
Hey Dave, Just curious as to what your first favorite forum is. Others might be interested......as well as "We want to know who we are competing against"

I'm probably the only one in our county in Southeastern NC to plant Burley tobacco this year. (we are in flue cured country but with the demise of quotas, burley is spreading). I also have a large garden and will be planting corn for silage to feed my cattle. They're not crops, but I also raise pullets for layers to sell and will be raising several hundred naturally produced broilers for market this year.
I plant grass mostly. No, I mean lots and lots of grass. gotta keep them mammas havin' babies.....

Re: Crop planting.
Dave I live in southern Kentucky. I put my onions out on Election Day in November for the following spring I have onions in late March or early April. The rest I start on derby day or shortly there after. I have found that if I plant earlier the frost will get most everything. I just put out tomatoes, peppers and planted limas, beans, corn, cucumbers, squash and sweet potatoes. Later I will plant some late corn and beans. Jim My wife has a long honey do list, I read it, thank about it, than take a nap to see if it goes away. 49 Cub ![]()
