Reputable on-line garden seed source?

I'm looking for a good place to get seed for the garden from a place with a good reputation and wide selection. My local "seed dealer" operates out of a "camper" and if you ask for cantaloupe seeds, he'll point you to the basket with little baggies of seed labeled "cantaloupe." In the past, this was fine. I'd till up my little spot, buy a few seeds, plant 'em and go. Now come the Cubs ... and a much bigger garden! I've been researching different varieties of seed I want to try, early and late varieties, etc. I ordered a catalog from Rupps, but they want you to buy in more bulk than I need. Any suggestions?

Another is Jung . I have never dealt with them, but receive their catalogs.
There are lots of seed distributors, including Agway. Hope you find some good stuff ............

I use Gurney"s for any seeds I can't get at CO-OP. You can't beat um.

Em and I and many of the local farmers/gardeners/growers here use Vessey Seeds and Stokes Seeds.

They both supply many garden centers in the US, so you might want to look at them. Their catalogues are a harbiringer of spring for us up here, and when they arrive end January, we go through them avidly contemplating all the good veggies and fruits that spring and summer will bring.

Em and I have been using them both for about 20 years now and nary a complaint, nothing but satisfaction.

i like to use heirloom seeds, because i figure this way, i'm helping to preserve history ;^)

also, heirlooms are tried, tested-true, and you can save their seeds and get the exact same plant again next year, which is not true of hybrid seeds. however, it can rightly be said that hybrids often perform better in their bred-for categories than heirlooms.

i love getting the catalogs in order to see the finished products the way they could be, as opposed to how they might come out of my garden (sometimes, mine are even be better) !!!

I buy seeds at the local stores. Grocery, farm and ranch, hardware store. One local hardware store has seeds in bulk. You can purchase a very small quantity.

I placed an order from "J.W. Jung Seed Co.". I was willing to pay the $10.00 shipping and handling - advertise/stated in their catalog. It really chaped my behind when the catalog split the order and charged me $10- shipping/handling for the first part and another $10- for the second part. I paid more for the shipping and handling than for the seeds/plants. That will be my last order from Jung.

Try http://www.gourmetseed.com/ I have used them for the last 2 years and get quality seeds. I've been able to find things that my GrandDad used to plant from these folks. Shipping is resonable and they are fast. They are in NM.

We got good service/prices/seed.----they will send catalog OR do online ordering!

We ordered from because they have "open pollinated " seed which allows you to save your own seed from what you grow if you want to!

I don't really like the hybrid "stuff", but some of it is okay, just can't save seed from it and next year the company's tend to drop that variety from the market!----That happened to us over the years with many hybrids that we did really like, so we went to the "open varieties so we would have our own seed supply! thanks; sonny

I have used FEDCO seeds for years. They don't buy seed from Montsano, the guys that developed the Killer Gene, so you may be missing a couple of varieties, but I can not beat thier prices anywhere else.

Same here, have used Johnny's for 12 years. They have some different stuff too.
