The subject of whether walnut trees are toxic has been kicked around a lot. I have been taking some classes from the County Extension Service. Conclusion is walnut trees produce a toxin called juglone that is toxic to some plants. The agent gave me a list of the ones that have adversely affected growth. I will post the list if anyone is interested. BTW this last class was held at a well known nursery and there were two old Black Walnut trees within 60 feet of the family vegetable garden.

You can also take a toe sack full of green walnuts in the hull, crush up the hulls, and poison a hole of water to get the fish. Not that I have done it. It is illegal.

Not as loud as a quarter stick either. Don't know for sure but heard it somewhere.

Yep, a quarter stick will work too. Like you said, kinda loud. You can use an old crank type telephone. If they answer, you can get them that way too.
