Rhubarb

My wife and I are looking for Rhubarb plants , She puts up a Great Strawberry Rhubarb Jam.
My Grandfather had a beautiful patch of Rhubarb , But am unsure what variety he had. what is the most common in the Ohio surrounding area.

I don't know about different types of rhubarb. Just that once planted it grows and grows and grows.

Edit. I have no rhubarb. Can't stand the stuff.

Horseradish. Any one want some transplants. I will bring a few to Docfest.

Get the big red stalk kind,---not sure of names, but we have 1 plant left from a patch that was over 100 yrs. old and the voles destroyed all but 1 plant!---the green stalk kind is awful stringy and bitter tasting in my opinion!---the red is more tender and better flavor! thanks; sonny

Phil i have to go over to beartown( that's between honeybrook and blue ball ) and pick up some plants. i never thought to ask what type they are , but anyway a mr. terry smoker is selling the plants at $1.00 a piece and will ship if your interested. they are on lancaster pa. craigslist in the farm and garden section with pics.

Phil, I asked Regina and she said "Chipmans Canada Red" is what she put out. (and recommends) It's supposed to be one of the sweetest red Rhubarbs there is. It also was highly recommended by a friend. She put it out a couple years ago and it's done very well. She also put out a white rhubarb and doesn't like it at all.

Don McCombs brought me some out last year to the tug.It has popped up this year and seems to be the red stalk kind.I guessit takes 2 years to really get going.Yep I like strawberry-rubarb jam!!! Can't wait!!! Kevin

My rhubarb was getting eaten bad.had to put sevin on it.its doing much better now.I think it was slugs.Next year I'll start picking it. Kevin

Try diatomaceous earth instead of the chemicals. It is non-toxic and just as effective on slugs.

Where do you get it
I have been looking for it for some time. I was looking for it for my quail for dusting to kill lice as well as ingested for the internal parasites it has extremely sharp edges seen only under a microscope . that cuts the bugs.
We do not have a problem with slugs , we have a great population of toads , they love them.

Phil you can get the non food grade at the local pool supply, that's all i use in the garden. I also picked up a 50 lb. sack of food grade off of e-pay pretty reasonable.

I have the green stalk kind planted here, and love it. When cut into 1" pieces, the stringiness is not a problem for me.

I honestly did not know there were different varieties. As a kid, the neighbor had the big red kind. I wondered why mine never got "big" like I remembered. My plants are prolific, and provide me with all the fruit I need, but I am going to look for some of the other.

In the next couple years they are going to be taking my house and 1/3 of my property(including my garden spot) for a road project. This will also include my rhubarb bed.

So, I need to prepare another bed now for the transplant process for when it is time. My soil is sandy clay, and my barn stalls and chicken coop were never mucked out in 25yrs before I bought the place. So I have the makings for a good bed that I would like to plant my rhubarb, asparagus and would like some horseradish in.

Any suggestions are welcome.

I have been curious about growing some here but never got around to researching. The grandparents always had a nice patch in NE and for some reason it died off a couple years ago (but the asparagus patches are going strong and the neighbor loves it when I am not there )
