Wondering about canning lids.

Postby hope farmer » Fri Sep 02, 2011 10:01 pm

Well, the beans are all canned and as usual, I ended up with leftover jar lids. Not many, just 4 or five. Right or wrong, I've never used the leftover lids the next year, just bought new. Wondering if the rubber seal would harden over time and not seal if I tried to use them next year.
Thanks for your time.

I've used them after 2 or 3 years. Just soak em in hot water before use. Grump

That is what Em does.. she sterilizes em in hot water. We have used lids in unopened boxes we have had for 4 or 5 years as well as opened boxes a couple 3 years old.

We never had a problem using lids from last year.

Just store them in a cool, dry place. They'll be fine.

My uses the unused ones too. She just puts them in hot water before using. Have never had a problem.

Great. I also soak them in hot water before using. Several stores around here have lids on sale. I may stock up.

We've never had problems using year old, or older, lids. Always boil them before use as many other posters said. Jeff
