Feeding Brewers Grain

I was wondering if anyone else was taking advantage of brewers grain as a feed. Around these parts there are a lot of micro breweries that have to get rid of their spent grain. It cost around 100 dollar a ton to put it in the land fill so it's pretty easy to have them pay your fuel cost for removal and get a great feed to boot. I know they are advertising it in some capacity in the Lancaster Farming Journal. 18-22 percent protein value of the mostly barley grain is nearly twice the value of oats and corn and since i'm feeding it at about 2/3 rd of my daily ration, I'm using my corn and oats more or less as a top dress just to keep them honest in case i can't get my hands on the grain from the brewery which has not been a problem . It has cut my feed bill down drastically which converts to cheaper meat ,especially since i'm raising for my self i've never pinched a penny as far as feed. I understand that for feeding hogs it is fed as a wet slurry and they really gobble it up. Anyway I was just wondering about that and any other savings that might be out there that i'm not up on.

Michael, around here, bakeries sell their stale bread cheaply, for livestock feed. I see pick up trucks, loaded with bread, drive by. Ed

Sounds good Ed, when i bought Pasha the lady was feeding bread , problem now is it's getting harder and harder to find a bakery.......baking bread that is,times are changing.

I've been feeding out of Victory also Russall, literally my cousin is a cook there, but question, wasn't the Milky Way Originally on Rt 100? I think they went through a thing with the state or the Turnpike commission.

No the farm by the the Turnpike was called Happy Days Farm , ran by the Supplee family. It is still being farmed at this time.
The property is now owned by Vanguard. At one time some investers wanted to develop it into a shopping mall . Was to be
larger than the Exton Square. There was a large opposition to another mall so close to Exton, would cause too much traffic and such.
No one considered that the Pennsylvania Turn Pike is an ajoining property. They were willing to build dedicated road ways and an infrastructure
to channelize the volume away from local roads. Any now there are only two working farms in Uwchlan Township , Milky Way Farm and Happy Days Farm.

Around here farmers get the old bread from the bakery outlet stores after its too old to be "day old".
