Curious lack of frost

Postby 400lbsonacubseatspring » Thu Oct 20, 2005 8:37 pm

Anyone else here in the maritime states think it odd that we haven't had a frost yet, let alone a killing frost? It's nice from a heating point of view, but the neighbor across the dip is spraying his potatoes to kill them, as they're nice and green yet. I don't recall us ever having to do that here.

Here in urban Maryland, we don't usually get a frost until November.

Yesterday was the date of average frost on Staten Island. There was a frost in Franklin back in September. I had to scrape it off to go get the paper.

boy i sure miss them northern tier days, eh rudi? was about this time, in 1992 i started my drive from rapid city south dakota to anchorage alaska. if i remember right, i took hwy 1 to hwy 2 which lead to hwy 3. or maybe it was the other way round. anyway, it was a beautiful through canada. did get a little stir crazy with only me to talk to for those 12 days.

much faster trip on the way back. had a 29ft class c motorhome. 3 drivers. went non stop from anchorage to the U. P. of michagan in about 96 hrs. (we were trapped with 5 kids and two large dogs) had to go fast if ya know what i mean.

bout the only thing that i thought was strange in canada, other than the funny tasting diet coke, was that KFC didnt have mashed potato's.

John:

True, KFC don't have mashed and a few other things you guys be used to. We have French Fries.... and now we have this green gooy stuff somebody says is supposed to be coleslaw... looks like Soylent Green to me..... (ok, any takers on that one :?: :?:   Main character's real name, name of movie and what was in the special jar?) Course, I haven't had KFC in at least 2 years now, and I guess I probably never will again... not if Em has anything to say about it.... :?

However, yup, funny thing is, and I was talking to my father-in-law and wife's uncle tonight over a family dinner, how I sort of missed Inuvik and Alert... I must be nuts or something, but I really do love the north country.

Nahanni !!

Never got to Anchorage.. too far south.. closest I got in Alaska was Fairbanks.. but I imagine you had a great experience up there.. The 96 hours on the way back... well... even though I have 5 of my own, I am not so sure I could have handled that.....

Nerves of steel have you young man :!:

Alaska is a big place. I worked in the Aleutians for almost a year and a couple of years later in the interior Fairbanks, Murphy Dome, Pedro Dome, Black River Paxton and Tok. Beverly wants to see Alaska So we made reservation for a land tour of 2 weeks for next June. I will see some of these places again after40 years. I wonder if the Gold Rush Saloon is still in Fairbanks? It was right on the Chenna Rivere. We will take the train from Anchorage to Fairbanks. That is a spetacular ride. You brought back many happy memories from my time there. I was smart enough to send my checks home and Bev saved enough for us to buy a house when I got home.

A lot of great memories from the north,The last time I saw the Gold Rush was back in early 1972. Was stationed at Eielson air base for 2 years. Ever make it too Pet's Place or Tellons ?

John, you are right, it is on the other side of the continent from my present QTH. Back in 1976 to 1978, I was posted to CFS Inuvik which is up in the McKenzie Delta as well as CFS Alert in 1977 and 1982 (6 month unaccompained tours) which is the very tip of Ellesmere Island. Alaska is pretty much down south from those places....

Fairbanks was a very cool place to visit.

Someday it would be nice to take an Inside Passage Cruise on Holland America to Alaska and maybe spend a few days up there...

My twin brother actually works at the BP ops in Prudhoe Bay.....

Rudi,

Seems to me it was some sort of spirits -- straining the old neurons here -- (like a muzzle loader, I can get them to fire most of the time, but they take one hell of a while to reload) something given to him by the old man he lived with.

I'm gonna take a guess and say it was scotch.
