Corn Mountain

New York Times article on corn in Iowa.(9Nov2005).All the bins are full and the corn is outside,at least a million bushels.It was another record year.I knew I should have bought that corn stove. The sad thing is that corn is out in the weather.I don't think they have a tarp big enough.

We had a good year around central Indiana . The elevators have corn stored on the ground. This grain is used up first but there is expected to be spoilage My neighbor converted his farroing house into a vehicle storage barn and also uses it to temporarly store grain that is in excess of what he can store in the bins. Most of the grain stored on the ground has piping run under the piles allowing for ventilation thus limiting the spoilage.

Up here, when they have their corn cribs filled up, they stop harvesting, and let the rest stand for the winter. As soon as the snow is gone in spring, the guys who sell corn for stove fuel come and harvest what's left.
Right now, I am surrounded by standing corn fields that will stay that way for the winter.
It might not be the very best solution, but it seems to work for them, and at least they get the cost of the planting back out of it. I imagine they actually write off the crop as a loss, and don't report the salvage income, but that's just speculation....

Never heard of a corn stove ' is this something new ? Does it heat good?
does it cost alot? or is my leg being pulled ?

I take it, most of the harvest that is being talked about is cow corn right?

Hauling corn for two farmers who own combine together. Elevator shut us off and limited hours several times, until 75 car train can haul it south. Elevator takes in enough corn in two days to fill 75 cars. These two people had sixteen hundred acres of corn between them, Yields are very good. Last loads went in yesterday, today started cutting firewood for next year.

I just returned from a hunting trip to MN and bought gas in MN and IA and got better gas mileage in my truck with the gas ethanol blend than regular gas my point is WHY don't we make more gas from corn and tell them &*% <deleted> over yonder in the desert to drink their &*% oil.
