My new IH refrigerator!!!!!!!!!!!!
here are some pics of my new IH refrigerator we got at the dump/"transfer station" today
http://photobucket.com/albums/c47/joste ... rigerator/
sorry for the really bad pics, but that was the only digital i could get a hold of right then. It has a little rust around the bottom, but for the price, FREE what can I ask for?
Last we heard was that it worked, but the wife didn't want it, so he took it to the dump, and called someone who called my dad who called my mom, who told me we went and picked it up a couple of hours later

with those stickers in that good a shape, and the whole to look so good, I'd bet that it spent most of its life as a beverage refrigerator in someone's basement or garage.
Replace the gasket with something generic, and you'll be surprised at how energy efficient those old refrigerators can be.
When I replaced my 1940 Kelvinator with my current, Whirlpool, super-energy efficient, energy star, bla bla bla, my electric bill jumped $20 a month. Same thing when my old FrostKing freezer got replaced with a new GE. Exactly what I'm paying the extra $40 a month for, I haven't really figured out.
The only benefit I've noticed is that the girls don't complain about how ugly the new ones are.
My recommendation, Johnny, is, don't enter into a serious relationship with a girl who doesn't appreciate antiques and "retro" decor. Or a girl who wouldn't countenance getting something "new" from a landfill transfer station. It'll save you a fortune over your lifetime.

Thanks for the advice Tom... I will NEVER NEVER NEVER get in such a relationship, seeing that it's not only the decor, but the tractors, and numerous parts of equipement that go with it LOL

Tom,
A long time ago I got a large ref/freezer for the shop as a freebie. It seemed in good shape and worked well but the avacado green chased it out of its' former home. Out of curiosity, I plugged it into a portable electric meter I have (a long story). I found it was costing $14/month at that time to run it. That seemed a lot just to have cold beverages nearby so I bought a much smaller unit that can hold more than 3 cases of cans and metered it. The replacement has paid for itself many times over... it costs $1.50/month to run. I'd be very careful about running an old refrigerator even if it is free. The total electric bill is too complex to use to evaluate a single appliance.

George,
This is true, however, I do have some reason to suspect the refrigerator and freezer. My electric bills are historically very stable, and I do long periods when no one is at home. I was able to determine once that my old fridge and freezer, when no one was home, were using about $10 combined per month. Recently, I have determined that my new fridge and freezer use somwhere in the vacinity of $60 combined per month, when no one is home. My cost per KWH is only 3% higher these days, so I don't think it's that. I think it is due to the self-defrost features in the refrigerator, and the fans that run in both. I don't think that appliances from the 1960's and 70's are very efficient, but their predecessors from the 40's and 50's certainly are. The earliest refrigerators were designed to be run on wiring that previously only had to run electric lights, so they had to sip rather than guzzle electricity out of necessity. As wiring improved during the 1950's and electricity became cheap, we designed some of the least efficient appliances ever for the following 2 decades, much like our cars.
Much like our farmall tractors, and early cars, very early appliances can be very energy efficient, as "enough power to do the job" was the driving concept, rather than "the most powerful machine of its class"

I never thought of it that way but I remember my folks house had a 30 amp 110 volt service. We had an old monitor top GE frige. The one where the whole top could be lifted off and replaced and you reused the cabinet. We had an oil burner, ringer washing machine, lights, a radio, an electric alarm clock as well as mom's electric iron all running on 14 gauge wire from the fuse box. After WWII dad had the service upgraded to 110 amo 220 volt.
