do I need a new monitor

Postby dracer398 » Sat Dec 31, 2005 7:08 pm

Hi Jim,

I've noticed that too on some of the threads. Try hitting the F11 key. This will give you more viewable area. When you want to go back to normal just hit the F11 key again.

I tried it on the eching primer thread, it helps a little but you still have to scroll.

Hope this helps,
Brian

If I understand the problem correctly, it is caused by people posting photos that are too large. Does it do it on all threads or just some? In other words, does this thread appear completely within the screen?

Jim,

I think you have your resolution set low, like 640X480, perhaps to make it easier to read.

Believe me, I understand the inclination......

The holiday graphic and the links header probably together are too large to fit inside the 640, and you end up with a scroll bar on the bottom.

I'm sure it will go away once the holiday graphic goes away for the season, although it is awfully cute, isn't it.

What size monitor do you have, BTW??

Jim, try right clicking on your main desktop, no windows open, then scroll down to the "Properties", then the "Settings" tab, then go to where you see the "Screen Resolution" then change that to around 1024x768 That is what most coumputers are set at now adays...

Hope this helps

Such problems as that coupled with my aging eyesigth are why when we bought a new computer recetnly we opted for a 19 inch LCD monitor. It reduces the scrolling and I can still have the larger print.

Jim,

If you're using a 15" right now, a 17", which are quite inexpensive in either version will seem huge to you. a 19" or 21" will seem like you're at a movie theatre. There's no reason to strain your eyes with a 15" monitor these days.

Well Jim and John!

That is exactly what Mrs. Santa brought me... :D :D :D Em actually got me a 17" Samsung TFT display. This is my first monitor in almost 10 years. I have all the old 14" AcerView34T UVGA's in the house... the ladies all have 15" or better, Em got a new 17" Samsung TFT last spring...

To answer a question:

The text of this thread including the sidebar for the member info and avatar fit nicely into my 14" UVGA screen quite nicely. Most do. And yes indeedy, the problem is caused by two main things.. Resolution and size of jpegs.

Many older monitors such as mine cannot support resolution greater than 800x600 and because of this, larger jpegs force the width of the screen causing the scroll bar to appear.

Many sites now incorporate auto-resize to help alleviate this, but, in reality, it only takes a second for a thoughtful person to resize the jpeg via WinXP's Image Resizer utility to correct this. Hey, I am guilty too of not always doing what should be done... so that is why sometimes you get threads that will perform such as this.

Also, seeing as I DO NOT see the Merry Christmas Avatar/Logo it makes no difference to me at all.

I have been trying to figure out why :? I don't see the replacement logo  :? - I still see the IH Logo :?: .. but that is okay. I got to see it once and I saved it, so I know what it looks like.. :D

and as for this:

There's no reason to strain your eyes with a 15" monitor these days.

Well... 3 girls in university, VA Pension.... yup... that'll do it.   Thank God for Mrs. Santa tho :!:   it will be a lot cheaper than a new pair of progressives..

Hi guys,
I've noticed the problem only on certain threads. This one is ok but like I mentioned above, in the discussion about self etching primer I have to scroll over to see the whole width of the page. My resolution is set at 1024 x 768

I am using a 19" lcd flat screen and I love it. Another plus with it is it starts up in about 1.5 seconds so I don't have to wait for it to warm up. I have horrible dialup service I could only wish to get 56k out of my modem on a good day the best I can get 28.8k and its usually 19-14k. So I am usually doing somthing else while I am on line and walk bace in the house from time to time to see where its at. I have the montitor sut off at 10 minutes but I hit the space bar and its right back on.
