Brent, be careful handling those dead birds. With all the talk about bird flu etc. some caution is warranted. Sounds like that trick with the hawk call CD might be worth looking into.

If you can't fix it with a hammer, you've got an electrical problem.

Well the sparrow problem has been solved at least for now. Spring here must be coming early and lady luck must be on my side. A pair of Red Tailed Hawks are building a nest in a tall pine at the end of my property. The sparrow population has decreased drastically. I watched one of them take a sparrow in filght. It's amazing that something that big is so agile. Thanks Mother Nature!
Always try the easiest thing first.

There are three types of hawk like ,birds of prey, Acipitors,Beuteos, and Falcons. Acipitors (Short wings long tail for manuvering)Bird catching like Coopers ,Goshawks etc. Will take birds on the wing. Beuteos, Redtails,Marshhawks etc soar. large wings shorter tail Will take anything, injured bird or otherwise but difficult for them to swing and move about with the agility of sparrows. Kind of like the difference between a Bommer and a Fighter Jet. ( Falcolns, Pointed wings)are also bird taking on the wing. Dive on there prey. extremely made for diving and speed.Check the birds again and let me know what type it is.

PWL,
You are probably right. The nesting birds are definitely Red Tails. I happened so fast and in the same area as the nest, I just assumed it was a Red Tail. Know what assuming anything does. MAKES AN (ASS) out of (U) and (ME). We have alot of different birds of pray around here including a pair of Golden Eagles. I keep an eye on them and see if I can identify the one taking the sparrows.

Golden are awsome, We have accurances of them through here. Spring Migration . However the Bald eagles are our staple . Since the Lake as "Cleaned up" Pesticides and herbicide run off. They are making a comeback. I heard tell, when I worked for the ODNR. That in the 70's They had only two pair nesting bald eagles. They never hatched any young, So the Biologists took the eggs and sampled them. There were any one of seven different chemicals that could have killed the embryo. The eggs had all seven. Not to mention the soft shell structure. So we are very fortunate that they found the problem and started there. today we, OHIO have been increasing nesting pairs ever year. It is'nt as much of task to see bald eagles in and around our area along Lake Erie.
