If you can't fix it with a hammer, you've got an electrical problem.

I guess it was just before they skipped '58 and '59 and came up with the " '60 new model"?
Are there any of the '57 model in the southland that didn't self destruct after a couple years?

George - my aunt had a 57 Plymouth that she drove for years. Probably never got over 35 or 40 mph. Drove all the locals crazy when she made the 6 mile drive to town. The car was garaged all it's life and had regular maintenance. I don't remember when she got rid of it but I didn't get a chance at it.

Pictures can be very deceiving. It runs ok but needs a carb. kit and everything on it works but the way it was described was, when you look at it, you can't see a place that isn't rusted, bad bondo, dented, or don't have a hole. That is a very good description, but it can be driven while the body work is going on. There are a lot of old cars around here, but I don't know of any Plymouths and the prices are pretty high too. I got this one off e-bay.

Merlin,
The ’55 Plymouth, (as for as I know) had an in line six flat head engine which was 230 cid, 117 horsepower one (throat) barrel carburetor.
The V8 was available in two displacement and three horsepower ranges. The 157 hp engine was of 241 cubic inches, while a 260 cubic inch engine produced 167 horsepower, and later, a mid-year addition of a power package (four-barrel carburetor and dual exhaust) increased the 260 to 177 horsepower.
The Plaza came with only a six cylinder engine.
P.S. I know the ’55 Plymouth very well; it was my first car I owned when I was a teenager about a hundred years ago.
I removed the original 241 cubic inches engine and put a ’59 Chrysler 391 Hemi in its place along with the transmission… I wish I had it back.
The old Chrysler products are bringing top dollar now. You have a good find.

Jack, this is the flathead 6 230 Cid and it has working power steering. Not sure if it is a add on or not though. The pump is bolted to the engine with the braces but it is ran off the generator shaft in the rear of the generator. Another thing is, there is no "Park" gear for the transmission. It has from top to bottom: Neutral, Drive, Low, and Reverse, with the lever coming out of the dash. The emergency brake works good, but if it didn't I guess one would have to build chocks for the wheels on hill sides and take someone with you to jump out and chock it. I'm going to have to get some books on it soon.
