Is this an Elk in Missouri?

Postby Jack fowler » Sat Oct 21, 2006 10:06 pm

I went to an Auction in the Missouri Ozarks today and when traveling a remote road , coming down a hill I caught this laying in a field. It was cold and rainy when I took this picture and by the time I got the truck stopped it was gone. Is it an Elk, I can't hardly believe it in Missouri?

Yup. Elk.

Several farmers in the area are raising elk. Notice that the fence is considerably higher than is necessary for cattle. The farmers sell the meat locally and the horns overseas. In Linn, Missouri you can purchase elk steaks at the local restaurant. You can purchase elk meat directly from the farmers. I currently have elk meat in the freezer.

About 8 years ago, in southern Osage county, MO. there were camels on a ranch. Other odd ball stuff. There is a guy raising and selling white bobwhite quail.

I believe there is an exotic animal auction house in Mexico, Mo.

For some reason I thought Elk had to stay cool in the summer. I know in Colorado they go to the high country in summer than in late August and early September, just before the first snow, they come back down. I guess after you think about it, Deer live very well around here,so I guess Elk should too...

I never knew there are Ranches rising Elk in Missouri. After John said the conservation was turning some loose I remembered the farmers protesting, because of the over population of the Deer and the damage they do in the fields. The farmers said Elk would just make things worse. In Missouri it’s so common to see Deer (not Elk) in fields gracing... I didn’t notice the high fence.

The wildlife dpt.in NC and TN.have stocked elk in the smoky mtn.park that borders NC and TN. and i understand they are doing quite well i think the only problem is bears are getting some of the newborn calves.

I live in southeastern kentucky. Some of those elk they released have made there way into kentucky. I haven't seen any yet, but the local newspaper has taken some pics of them here in our county. I'd love to see one, Brandon.

from the looks of the fence it probly is an elk farm or a deer farm with an elk. We have a few places here in CNY that have them real neet to look at different times of the year.

Arkansas imported elk several years ago and their numbers have increased so that they now allow some hunting. I believe that the limited number of hunting permits go to the highest bidder and are very expensive. Dan

What kind of call do they make? Isn't it kind of like a whistling moo? I'd like to hear one. Brandon.

From Sheriff's Report, local paper, Linn, Missouri.

3 dogs entered his wildlife preserve and killed 10 white tail does and wounded a buck. Owner valued the animals at $150,000-

Brandon
The Fish and Game Dept released Elk in the mountians of eastern KY and in the Land between the Lakes area of western KY several years ago, long enough ago that limited hunting, by permit, has been allowed for about 3-4 years.

He is kind of optimistic on the price isn't he Eugene? Must be hoping for big insurance claim or to take a loss on taxes.
