Hey there all!
I know that this is not the "Lionel Collector's Website" but I thought that there must be SOMEONE here on this site who could help me...
I have been "collecting" old Lionels since my dad gave my my first "old" set when I was 5 or 6 years old. (1974 or 1975) Still have that set to this day...it is from the late 40's or early 50's. Over the years, I have gotten quite a collection and really enjoy keeping the tradition alive in my kids the same way it was passed along to me when I was a kid...what a reflection on some simpler times...but I digress!!
One of the accessories that I have collected is the "Portal Gantry Crane" with its "electro magnet" to pick up stuff. I really enjoyed playing with that toy, and would like to continue, but the insulation on the wires has gotten brittle and now are partly bare. This has made the crane unusable because of arcing and it is now dangerous. I have nice new replacement wire to redo this, but I am having a problem replacing it.
All of the wires are soldered to a 1950's version of a "PC Board" which is made out of a fibrous material. Long and short (too long to be short now!) is that when I try to apply heat to the the solder to melt it and remove the wire, the fibrous material acts like a heatsink and it will not melt. How can I get these wires off and new ones on without melting the plastic parts or burning the fiberboard by using a torch!!!
I would really like to run this crane and let my kids play with it, but I can't do that with the wires being as they are!!!
Can anyone help me??
Thanks a TON!
Mike in La Crosse, WI
P.S. - I love old toys... that is why I want a CUB to pass on to my kids!

is it possible to clip the wire 1/2 or 3/4 in from the board and put a small peice of heat shrink over the new wire solder to the tag peice you left attached to the board slide the heat shrink over the solder joint and shrink.

Mike,
I had a similar problem with a log loader/unloader with my Lionel Train. I did something similar to what Ralph is suggesting and it worked great.

I bought an old tractor all dusty and worn,
knew nothing about her just the year she was born
I washed her and greased her and painted her red
Now she lives happily right here in my shed.
