Big Big Spider

Mon Aug 23, 2004 8:33 pm

This spider has taken up residence near my daughters room. It weaves a web like a jacob's ladder, some people around here call it a banana spider but it's not. Does anyone know what kind of spider it is :?: :?:

Hey Donny, don't you mean "what kind of spider it was

It looks like the kind of spider you don't want to have chomp down on you.

Your camera does a great job, those pictures you posted of your rig and new res. for cubbud came out good too.

If that is the same spider (Argiope) that Cub Hut posted about then it is also called a Banana-Spider. If I see one I am gonna unpeel it. Hope you kilt that sucker or at least sent it to Pollack~Pines.

Around here I have always heard them called garden spiders. They don't bother people, although they are BIG, and are very good to have in a veggie garden. They will help take care of the harmful garden bugs. When I use to raise a garden, I would find them with webs built between rows. It seemed like they would also move/relocate their web after a few days in one spot, or maybe something would tear it down and they would build another in a different place. That heavy ziz-zag part of the web also helps make it easier for people to see it.

I have several of these around the house. I notice their webs at night but, in the morning, they are gone. One has made a web in a bush next to my patio and has caught several flying insects.
