Alaskan cruise opinions/suggestions wanted

Postby Ken (48 Cub) » Wed Mar 28, 2012 12:36 pm

The wife and I are wanting to take an Alaskan cruise this fall for our 30th wedding anniverary. I know some of you have done this so I thought I would ask for opinions/suggestions of what to do or not to do. We are looking at a 7 day inter-coastal cruise. We just can't afford the longer trips that have land adventures with them.

Thanks,
Ken, Annie the '48.

I think we gotter if'n she don't jump, Andy Griffith.

Steve B just did one a year or so ago I believe. He'll probably fill you in also. Take a coat along.
There are two ways to get enough Cubs. One is to continue to accumulate more and more. The other is to desire less.

when viewing the glaciers, watch the flocks of birds. They will fly to where the next chunk is going to fall, before it falls. Best way not to miss it. The falling ice stunns the fish, making them temporarily float, the birds get them before they come to their senses.

Ken,

You will have a great time. Magnificent scenery. Personal highlight, for me, was the White Pass Railroad trip.

Ken, Each of the ports you stop out will have both shopping and tours. The tours may be eagle watching, whale watching, the train ride Bill recommended, helicopter up to a glacier, or something else. I'd pick what sounds the most interesting to you at each stop and do that. The fact that you won't be going to Denali National Park or elsewhere will not diminsish the fun you'll have in a State full of magnificent scenery and wildlife.

We loved our trip We did the 7 Day inside Passage. If we go again we will do the 7 day to Denali . Each port has it's excursions We did the boat out an fly back in Katchican. It was phenomenal . Juno we did the whale watch and glacier tour.Got to see a pod of Killer whale we were told that was not common at that time of the year. Skagway, Rode the train up to the border then continued up into the Klondike on a Bus. Spent a lot of time in the dinning area watching out the floor to ceiling windows. Victoria B.C. was neat. Spent the evening around the harbor area. The sidewalk actors that were Very entertaining to watch.

Buy some GOOD binoculars if you don't have some.Be prepared to deal with some rainy weather Katican get's 100+ inches of rain each Year. And take some warm clothes with you.

Very similar trip to SteveB. Except our bus ride from Seattle to Vancouver was very foggy and couldnt see much. The inside passage is very nice trip and as Bill said , the train ride is exceptional.

Ken my wife and I plan to make the trip again and like SteveB suggests we will see Denalli. We traveled on Holland America out of Van Couver, the ships are smaller than some of the other lines and I thought they were great. We spent 4 days in Van Couver als that is a great place to visit as well. As far as Alaska we did a excursian at every port, from Salmon fishing to the White Pass Railway every where you look is a post card. I bought a new digital camera with a very powerfull zoom and took about a million pictures. I have quite a few on Face book if you use face book you can see some. As you can tell it was our favorite trip ever. Anything else I can tell you about don't hesitate to contact me. I also recommend a outside cabin with a window or a balcony well worth the upgrade. Boy now I want to go again soon. My wife had been to 49 states and Alaska made 50, very impressive that she actually saw the whole country.

September should be a drier than spring. And you may get some off peak discounts.

If you are talking about the 3rd weekend in September count me out. :( I have a Cub Fest to attend in Tipton Indiana that weekend. :{_}:

I haven't done an Alaska cruise, but I love cruises in general, I think they're vacation bargains. As Joe mentioned, upgrade to an outside cabin, Carnival calls them ocean view, or balcony cabins. It's well worth the extra cost and I'm sure that on an Alaska cruise, would be even more of a bonus.

I agree with all the comments, so far. Take plenty of rain and cold weather gear.

Another thing to consider is the children. September they would be in school , so there may not be many on board. We went in August when our kids were younger and there werent a lot of friends to play with. On Royal Carribisan anyway. Now , that would be a good thing for us as a little older folks.
