Farmall Cub

As many of you know, I reached retirement age back in November and have been thinking about hanging it up and enjoying life. Friday I finally told my boss that May 4th will be my last day of work as a building maintenance consultant at the IRS building in Covington.

However, in addition to collecting my retirement pay, I have accepted a temporary, full time job with a company that that is contracted by the US Government to help rebuild Iraq. I will be working with them as a consultant to design, build and maintain many new buildings that will replace the ones destroyed there during the last ten years. This job is expected to last about a year to eighteen months, so I will still be young enough to enjoy my retirement.

The pay is almost four times what I was making here so as far as earnings it would almost be as if I remained at my present job for four or five more years. The only drawback is I will need to spend the next six to eight months in Iraq to help assess the damages done and how best to begin the rebuilding. After that I will have to return every other month to evaluate the ongoing work.

I’m looking forward to this new “chapter” in my life. By the way Rosie is a bit hesitant, but she agrees it is a good way to end my working career with a little extra spending money. I will be leaving July 9th after a two week orientation to the company at their Gainesville Georgia office. Wish me luck, maybe we can have a party before I leave.

Been working since November- not going to retire and sure ain't leaven those cubs, or I mean Rosie and the cubs and the dogs, and the new son-in-law, and the Barnyard Bash. So happy Aprils fools back atcha.

if it is true congrats. but i am with the rest of em. april fools is about. dont think he would agree to missing cub tug...

Well okay, I am not retiring in May (but I could) and I am not taking a job with a government vender in Iraq. Yes it was all a mean and despicable April Fools joke. But there is a bit of truth in it. I really do work as a building maintenance consultant for the government (I’m on break right now. )

One of the companies that contracted with us does a lot of overseas maintenance work for the federal government. In talking to our current contractor I was told I could easily get a job in Iraq with them at a pay rate much greater than my current salary if I wanted (I don’t ever expect that to happen.) Their office is actually in southern Florida, not really in Gainesville. However, I am not allowed to work for any vendor for two years after I retire if I oversaw any work performed by that vendor as a federal employee. So, the company is real and is not one of those internet fraud outfits.

My daughter was in on the joke, but I sure did get a lot of calls from family and local friends. My niece, my daughter’s Maid of Honor in her upcoming wedding, was the most concerned. She believes just about everything I say (silly girl). Melissa finally let her in on it when she began to worry about me missing the wedding.

Maybe next year I will try something a bit more believable. I spent a whole five minutes on this story just to see it blow out of the water so quickly.
