Considering taking a big plunge on a new Dodge dully one ton 4x4 with a Cunmins and automatic trans, Historically I am a Ford man I have never liked Dodge truck , owned one dodge truck many years ago and that was a bad experience ,,,,,,,,,but times have changed Ford has screwed up big time with there diesel engines and I believe Dodge with the Cummins is the better way to go,,,,,,,,, however I still remember that old Dodge that I owned back in the 80's so I am hesitant on the truck but feeling positive on the Cummins,,,,,,,,,, whats the word from you Dodge men on the trucks and the diesel???????
I have a 02 , 2500 Dodge diesel ,I purchased it approx 2years ago with 107 k miles. I use it to pull a 27' RV and also to haul tractors. So far it has done a great job, I understand there were some negative issues in 07 with the engines, because of some Goverment mandated garbage, I would assume that this issue has been resolved. Fuel mileage averages 12-13 withthe RV or heavy tractor, without trailer it has has exceed 19 MPG. Average is 16-18 MPG. Each brand name has it's good and bad points. I am told to replace injectors in the new Fords the cab must be removed. I am leary of the Duramax because of experiences I observed at the electric company where I worked, at approx 65k the engines had to be rebuilt or replaced, that was several years ago and maybe those issues have been resolved . One of my son in laws has a Duramax (2012) and loves it.
I started out with nothing and now I only have half of that left !
I too believe that goverment mandated emissions issues have been solved I havent heard anything bad yet on the new Cummins, the cow urea tank is now a thing of the past I am very happy with that one...
How is Dodge doing with their automatic transmissions are they tough and long lasting? My friend blew the rear axle twice on his 07 4X4 , and currently there are two Dodge trucks advertised locally as having recently rebuilt rear axles that kinda makes me wonder if there is axle issues...
I'm driving a 2001, 2500 Dodge 4x4 , with diesel and 4 speed auto. It has just over 195,000 miles . The engine still idles with 30 psi oil and maintains about 55 psi at 2,000 rpm. Hopefuly the engine should last to 350,000 before a major rebuild. If I don't drive in town very much it maintains about 18 mpg on good diesel fuel(20 mpg best). Oil is changed every 5,000 miles and fuel filter every 10,000 miles or when it won't redline the Tac. I have't had any problems with the auto trans. I haven't pulled any really heavy loads, but it is set up for a gooseneck and I don't know what the first 125,000 miles were like. I use it to run the interstate and mountain roads of Virginia and West Virginia.
I've owned two. A 93 that I bought new and drove for 11 years with no problems. Bought a 2004 which I still have. So far no problems with it. If you are going to tow frequently I would recommend the 6 speed stick. I get 14-16mpg towing my horse trailer/fifth wheel and 20-22 not towing. I just took in in for service and the dodge dealer updated the chip for free. I have to check it again but the first time I checked the milage with new chip and not towing I got 24mpg. The Cummins engine has the least number of moving parts of any of the diesels plus the fuel is injected right into the cylinder rather into a pre chamber like the Fords, so glow plugs are not used.
Always try the easiest thing first.
See, now if you were to move South, say to TN., you could afford 2 trucks with what you would save in taxes.
Glad I made the move, cause I could not afford to live there, let alone think about a new truck.

I hear ya and agree sorta , but NY has its advantages too ,very hard to up and move at this point.
I drive a 2wd 2500 Dodge with a 5.9 Cummins, bought it new in 2006, has 120,000 miles, no mechanical problems whatsoever and I do an awful lot of hauling. I have spoken to other fellows that haul and it seems that the only issue they have had is tierods and other components going out on the front axle due to the heavy weight of this engine. 24 MPG highway, 18 MPG city, 15-16 MPG hauling, no chip installed.
I'm working at a Dodge dealer,,,like the 5.9Land 6.7L better than the Ford Diesels!!! No real problems I see with the engines or trans other than when they get a hell of a lot of miles on them.Still a Ford man but the Cummins Diesel is hard to beat.Just my 2 cents!!! Kevin
