Ed: I'd like three glazed donuts and two cream filled danish rolls please!
Woman behind counter: I'm sorry sir, but I can't sell those to you.
Ed: Why? Is it because I don't look like I should be eating pastry?
Woman behind counter: No sir, that is not the reason.
Ed: Okay then, is it because this is John Deere country and I like Farmall?
Woman behind counter: Oh, no sir, not at all!
Ed: Then tell me! Why won't you sell me the pastries I asked for?
Woman behind counter: Well sir, it's because this is an auto parts store!

Re: No Help at Auto Zone
This photo was taken recently in my favorite auto parts store.
On the right is Mr. T, owner of Mr. T's Auto Parts in Toppenish, WA. Now this is a REAL auto parts store. Mr. T is way beyond retirement age, but fortunately for us he continues to be open 363 days a year. Notice there is no computer anywhere in the store. It's just him and his wife. He rarely uses the catalogs on the counter, doesn't need to. He actually stocks Farmall Cub oil filters and Cub Cadet air filters, right on the shelf. He knows what his customers want and carries those items. Of course he sells Seafoam and the Seafoam penetrating oil. There is an Autozone across the street, but I only go in there when there is NO alternative. Too bad places like Mr. T's are not as common as they used to be, but if you look you will find one.

You are so lucky. Kind of reminds me of Ray's in New Bedford.
The other thing that's happening, we have remaining just one old-fashioned electric repair where you drop off your starter or generator and pick it up in a couple days, all fixed. Nowadays your replacement is in stock (made on the other side of the world), they give you a refund for the core. Very convenient but I was talking to the owner of the auto-electric shop and he said this has just about killed his business, which has been a family run place employing 6-10 people for many years. .

Re: No Help at Auto Zone
Bob,
There is a shop like this in Yakima, about 20 miles north of here, that is one of those old-fashioned electrical repair shops. In a farming community this is an important service to farmers who have old or odd equipment and need it fixed NOW. Last year I took a Cub started there for repairs. It needed an armature, brushes, and bearings. I got it back the next day, good as new. It's now got another 60 good years of service left in it, certainly more than me.
