Being that my house is an original post-and-beam, built just before 1800, with a stone foundation, we get our share of mice, and yes, occasionally we've had rats. To solve that problem I keep a few good cats and have strategic cat-doors so they can access all areas of cellar, the crawl space, the attic, etc., and now any creature that comes in doesn't last very long.
This has happened before.
Friday night, I'm sleeping about 1 a.m., I hear a loud squeaking/screaming. Rollo has caught a rabbit, and it's right by me. He's caught it, probably out in the field, which is covered with snow, dragged it home, then taken it thru the small cat-door in cellar window, then gone down to cellar floor, across the cellar, then 1/2 way up steps to 1st floor, then to the ramp I made to 2nd floor steps, then through a small cat door, approx 4-5 " square, then up all the steps, then dragging it all the way to right next to my bed.
Last time, I yelled at him and shut the bedroom door, then in the morning there was rabbit fur, guts, blood all over my house.
This time I put the rabbit (still alive) in a dust-pan, opened a window and flung it out.
When I got up at 5 a.m., Rollo was sleeping on the couch.
When I went outside at 7 a.m., this is what he was doing:

To wake up to an injured pigeon gift on your bed at 3am is a real treat. A real wake up call!

Can't think of a solution to the problem. They have a pet-door that opens only to a pet with an implanted chip, but even that would not work, in this case.

Now that right there is a CAT! We have a herd of 9 outdoor "barn" cats as I call them though they are really mostly "porch" cats. They do like to hunt, and it is rare you see any sign of a mouse, lizard, or similar around here, except for the various corpses they bring up and deposit in the side yard, I guess to prove to us they are doing their job....

Yup when he was just a couple weeks old I could tell he was stronger and smarter. Now he will be 2 in April, he's very muscular, very active, a couple days ago he was running around in deep fluffy snow having a blast.
He has a sister (not very sociable with ppl, like he is) but sometimes I wonder if they work together to catch the rabbits, it can't be easy, but they get a lot of them.

i had that "smell" one day walking into my shop , access to the work area is usually closed off by a door , in this case left open a few days . a very impressive sized rat was half eaten behind the 10' break . bob , i might consider limited access to the bedroom , it might be a half dead snake this summer

Rabbits do squeal don't they? I picked up a young one that had huddled down in the yard one time and Jeanne thought I must be killing it. We don't have any barn cats anymore. The coyotes think a cat is dessert. Vern

We used to have a neighborhood cat that would make the circle of 3 or 4 houses looking for handouts. I would always leave out just enough food to keep it coming back, because it was real good at eliminating moles. All went well, until it found where a neighbor fed his barn cat, and it decided to stay there.
