Alfred Hitchock movies

Postby John *.?-!.* cub owner » Sun Mar 10, 2013 1:42 pm

I feel like I am in The Birds. Mom always liked to watch birds, so I put up a feeder where she could see it. When she had to move into a nursing home I moved it outside the window there, but after 3 months not a single bird had come to it, even though this is a pretty rural area with a lot of woods around. Three weeks ago I moved it back out here, and have been getting a few birds, but it looks like the blackbirds have returned to the area. At 9 am when I took this picture both feeders were full, but at 1pm the brown one is empty and the red one half empty. It has been raining hard a good bit of the day, but the birds have stayed out there eating rather than hunting for cover, with at times there being about twice as many as in this photo.

HOLY COW
I saw a flock almost that big this week but they were Robins so spring is near... Plus peepers have been at it for several weeks already.

That bunch left late this afternoon, and a bunch of about 35 or so Red Wings moved in.

Were they red winged black birds or black bodied red birds? I am always confused by the two. :big smile:

Afraid I know very little about birds, but these looked like blackbirds with just a little dab of red on the edge of wings. I took this picture through a thermopain window, and for some reason the red came out looking funny. the white in the picture is actually red.

John, I know absolutely nothing about birds other than they make a hechuva mess on everything in the barn. My brother-in-law used to talk about red wing birds until one day I asked if he was sure they weren't black wing red birds. He laughed and said he had never thought of it that way.

I do notice though that one of the birds seems to be irritated at having his/her photo taken! :D

A while back, we were visiting George & Marilyn Willer and a flock of red wings converged on their back yard. The ground was almost covered with those things! Even George had never seen anything like it. Ne feeder, they were just feeding off the lawn. They stayed for about 45 mins., migrated briefly to the front yard and then they were gone. We just watched out the window, in amazement. I don't think anyone got any pics, though.

Normally about this time of year I quit feeding birds, but with the snow we had coming in I got some more feed and decided to feed them a little longer. I did move the feeder, they had about destroyed the grass where it was.
Image

As the ground became covered I put a lid from a storage bin under my partly empty woodshed and put some feed on it. Birds seemed to appreciate that.
Image

Noticed some looking for food under the propane tank, so another lid with seed under there also.
Image

Was just wondering, what kind of birds do you raise if you plant bird seed?

John, when I planted bird seed I got sunflowers and some other grains ands lot of happy birds! Have found that they like black seeds better than striped seeds for human consumption. Have been planting a row in the garden next to the road for privacy, and hopeing the birds will feed on them and insects, not the veggies.

Mom's mobile home is no longer here, and just before the rain started last week I got the ground worked up and just hours before the rain got it seeded and strawed. timing was right, but at the rate the birds are burrowing down through the snow and straw it looks like I may have to reseed it.

I just realized that all these years I have been wasting a lot of work and gasoline pushing snow off the roads, when all I really needed to do was spread some birdseed in the road. :{_}: The bare spots are where I have thrown birdseed out on the snow the last couple days.
