The only one's I've purged are the obvious spammer accounts (a lot of those; I keep it clean) and a very small number of members who choose to go a different path. Unfortunately, there are some members who have passed and I keep their accounts as inactive for security reasons and to maintain their legacy on the site.
Many members come back after years of being dormant. I know this, because they usually email me because they forgot their login name, password or changed email addresses. If they register a new account, I merge their history into the new account so they maintain their registration date and posts.
