Parts Washer Cleaners
My wife gave me a small parts washer for Christmas a few years ago. It has never been used, just sitting around collecting dust. What type cleaner do ya'll use in the solution. I would like to stay away from the typical solvent cleaners and stick to something more user and environmentally friendly. Mr E at DSCF is using Purple Power cleaner. Recommendations???

Re: Parts Washer Cleaners
Don't know about environmentally friendly, I use kerosene. Parts washer clean up time, drain the parts washer into 5 gallon pails. Scrape out remaining sludge. Let kerosene set for several days to settle out the sludge. Dip out and pour the clean kerosene back into the parts washer. The sludge along with waste engine oil is used to start brush pile fires.
I have an excuse. CRS.

Re: Parts Washer Cleaners
I use Tractor Supply PSC 1000, but that is in the range of the cleaners you wanted to avoid. There are many water based cleaners on the market that are supposed to be more environmentally friendly , but the general opinion is they do not work as well as the petroleum based ones. The water based ones also will freeze, and can damage the pump if it gets that cold where your washer will be.

Re: Parts Washer Cleaners
Compare the cost of the water based solvents to kerosene or diesel fuel. When I set up my parts washer, kerosene was less expensive. And after parts washer clean up and settling time, most of it can be reused.
I have a frequent disposal use for waste oil or parts cleaner sludge, so it's not a problem.
How do you dispose of water based solvents, contains petroleum products, can't flush it down the drain in most sewage systems.

Re: Parts Washer Cleaners
I use Simple Green in my parts washer. Kerosene is more effective, but my parts washer is not set up for flammable cleaner.

Tim, do you dilute or use it full strength?

Full strength. My washer will hold about 12 gallons. It was on sale at Napa the other day for 19.95 for the 5 gallon pail. Usually last me about a year depending on how much I use it.

Will Purple Power freeze at temperatures in the o or a little below range? My parts washer sets under a lean to, and we do reach those temperatures here in eastern Mo. at times.

Yes. I have had Purple Power freeze solid at temperatures warmer than zero.
