How important is remote linking in the Image Server?

How important is direct image posting?

It's a deal killer - no direct posting, no photo server!

It's a disappointment, but I guess I can live without it.

How important is remote linking in the Image Server?

Postby lildog » Fri Sep 16, 2005 7:12 pm

We've discovered that the Coppermine Photo Gallery software I've chosen for our image server does not support Image URLs to allow you to post images in this forum using the [img] tag or HTML. Instead, you get a web page url that jumps to the image in the gallery (instead of displaying the picture with your text).

I've done some research and it appears the only PHP image galleries that support direct linking to the images run in the neighborhood of about $200, not including server costs. I'm still looking for a cheaper piece of software that supports this option, but most of them lack other features the Coppermine software has. I've also read that allowing remote linking poses significant bandwidth and security issues (which is why most freeware doesn't support this feature - they just don't have the security for it).

How important is direct image posting?

I guess I don't understand the question. What are you looking for other than what Donny and I both did in the other thread?

Jim, You and Donny found a work-around, but I think many folks were hoping it would be a little more intuitive than that.

Jim,

Please explain how you posted the image from the photo server!

Thanks

Never mind, Donny has already posted the technique - left click on photo, select properties and copy/paste the URL as an IMG! Piece of cake (or apple pie)

Direct image posting is very easy - this poll is BUSTED!

I agree Carl. This will work fine. We just need to convey to the general membership how easy it is to do.

The procedure for posting a picture remains the same except we now have a permanent place to host pictures and it's free to the users of this board :!: In order to post a picture directly to a thread Dennis would have to provide the bandwidth necessary and modify the software accordingly.
Thanks lildog you have done a fine job :!: :!: :!:

John:

It is really quite simple and it is identical to the eBay procedure described in the How To Do Neat Stuff in a Post.

This is done quite simply. First you must right click on the photo and then select properties. When that dialogue box comes up there will be a bunch of info in the box such as Protocol, Type, Address, Size, Dimensions, Created and Modified. Highlight the Address contents which in this case are: "http://i11.ebayimg.com/01/i/04/7a/88/f8_2.JPG" . Then paste them into your post and then wrap with the [ img]http://i11.ebayimg.com/01/i/04/7a/88/f8_2.JPG[ /img] tags. The pic can now be displayed (hot-linked) in your post.

And I unknowingly just did what I normally do when in doubt, and posted to the [url=http://farmallcub.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=9225&start=15]"MIRRORIZED ACCESSORY" out of stock
[/url] thread.

Like your Dad said,
We just need to convey to the general membership how easy it is to do.
Just point them to the eBay summary in the How To's....
Confusion breeds Discussion which breeds Knowledge which breeds Confidence which breeds Friendship
