Our wonderful Christmas gift.

Postby bob in CT » Fri Dec 25, 2009 8:52 pm

My mother as diagnosed with cancer back in September. For a while, the news was getting worse as she had a pelvic cancer that is aggressive and she also was found to have breast cancer too. She had chemotherapy and breezed right through it. She actually came home from the 3rd session and raked leaves! She had surgery on December 8th. Two surgeons and about 4 hours in the operating room. She was up and walking quickly and off all pain medication in 4 days. In less than 2 weeks she was cleared to drive by her doctor and both doctors are in utter amazement at her progress. She is 86 years old and she is talking about going back to work depending upon how she feels after her chemo begins after the New Year. She has been working at the same company since 1941. Because of other family obligations it was just the 4 of us for Christmas this year: my wife, sister, and mom. Claude Downing ( my dear friend from the forum) sent me some of his prized sweet potatoes including the very special Haymans. They were part of the meal. The squash came from the garden. The chestnut stuffing was made from our own chestnuts (my first harvest) and fresh sage leaves picked on Christmas Eve. Plus the blueberries for the pie came from my blueberry patch. We all contributed something to preparing the meal but the best gift of all was another Christmas with our most special mom. We may have challenges ahead, but today was pure joy. :D

Thanks everyone. Yeah she is a tough bird. The doctors all say her good physical condition from all the gardening and other work she always finds to do has paid big dividends. She told the doctors early on the she wanted them to 'find it and fix it because she was not ready yet" . She is one special lady.

Dear Bob,

Your mother's spirit is inspiring, and reminds me of my own mother and our time with her following her diagnosis.

Looks like your mom has every intention of continuing to live her life to the fullest...and that's great!

Cherish every moment,

Charles

Now ole Corky is running and back to life,
Much to the surprise of my dear, dear wife!
