I have a half hour commute and it isn't too bad. I'd hate to have to drive an hour each trip like John does. I bet he hasn't listened to Toby Keith's "Honkytonk University" album 43 times.
There are two ways to get enough Cubs. One is to continue to accumulate more and more. The other is to desire less.

I can identify with John's statement. I currently drive about 40 minutes each way. Had one job for about 3 years with a 90 minute ride each way. But John is absolutely correct, those long commutes gives you time to get prepared for work on the way in and time to de-stress on the way home. You just have to be really careful if you are coming home late that the relaxation doesn't make you toooo sleepy.

Be careful, John.

Nice pic John of you and Mikey :D and congrats :applause: on making the news :!:

I do not envy John and his daily commute at all. A lot of time spent getting to and from work that could be better spent with his loved ones.... but I guess it is a fact of life and one that has been with us a long time. As was mentioned, the commute is a good time to mentally and physically prepare for work on the way in and wind down on the way home --- but I can think of a few better ways to wind down than driving home on a congested highway/freeway.

That is another reason why I love being retired or whatever this life is called :{_}:

Thanks, guys. When I took the job in Columbus, I told Sheri it would probably just be for 2 or 3 years, then we'd move closer or I'd find something closer to home. That was 12 years ago. I guess it's true what they say about life being what happens while you're making other plans.

I enjoy my job and it is true that I can't find anything in my chosen field close to home, let alone anything that pays nearly as well. I've retired two commuting vehicles and can tell you the value of having a car that you are comfortable in and that gets good gas mileage.

And, yes, Ed, that is quite a leash I've got on.

job? what's a job? LOL At one point I was driving 45 miles one way, then down to 25 miles, then down to 15 miles, and finally for the last 20 years, 4.5 miles one way. Now if I want to work I walk 30 yards to the tractor shed.

Before our son was born, my wife had the opportunity to take a job at the corporate office of the company she worked for. The job paid more and offered more responsibility. And, since I was already driving to Columbus, it actually made sense for her to take it. So, we shared a 120 mile round-trip commute for a couple of years. It was nice to have a companion, but getting up at 5 am and getting home around 6:30 pm was really tough. Thankfully, we were a lot younger then. :D

After Mikey was born, she went back to work there and my folks kept Mikey. That added another 10 miles and half an hour to the commute, but the money was sweet. When Mikey got old enough for preschool, Sheri quit her job to be home with him. There was just no way we could both work in Columbus and still live in Chillicothe. Then, the economy hit the crapper and, though she'd like to go back to work, there aren't any jobs for her locally that pay enough to cover child care. Sheesh!

Back when my 3 kids little were in preschool and and daycare we spent almost what we earned just for the tuition talk about living hand to mouth there was no money left , part way thru that I found that we could no longer afford health insurance we went three years with zero coverage :( what a nightmare that was glad that part is over hindsight for me is never going to be sweet those times sucked :!: ......
