My Sister's Hip

Postby Barnyard » Mon Oct 10, 2011 7:06 pm

I got a call last night from my oldest (favorite) sister. She said she tripped over herself about midnight Friday and broke her hip. Listening to her I could tell she was in a lot of pain. Surgery was scheduled for this afternoon and haven't heard from anyone yet. She's 71 and I know this type of thing can be tough on us old timers. I'm keeping my phone lines open awaiting word. She's the only person who can make custard pie the way Mom did and never forgets my birthday. I gotta keep her around a long while. :D

Bill, Hip surgery has improved dramatically, in the past 10 years. She should do fine. (I've been involved in thousands of hip surgeries, in my 40 years of employment in radiology, and have seen the changes) Ed

Bill there are many different types of hip surgery. My mother broke the end off the long bone of the upper leg. (tibbia if I remember right). Bev had a complete replacement. The ball as well as the socket and both did well. i pray for your sister to do as well. By the way what is the favorite sister all about, the only way i could have a favorite sister is for her to be the only one.

Thanks for the thoughts everyone. My niece called just a bit ago and told me the surgeon said her mom’s hip wasn’t as bad as expected. He first thought she would need a partial replacement but once he got a good look at the x-rays and all he decided to pin it. She is supposed to be able to put weight on it sometime tomorrow, but will need therapy for a while.

Bill, Laura was the oldest at 16 when Dad died, I was five. I had three older sisters, a younger brother and my youngest sister wasn’t born yet. Mom moved us out of town and into a city 15 miles away. Laura did everything she could to help Mom get by. She married at 18 and moved back to our hometown, but still saw to it that Mom got the help she needed. My next two oldest sisters both moved out at eighteen and seldom gave mom a hand. When Laura wasn’t there Mom would walk 4 miles to the A&P store totin’ us younger kids along to help best we could. When I finally got my license I saw to it Laura never had to make so many trips to take Mom all the time. As for the others, their only reason to drive was to be running around with friends, Mom was seldom thought of. While I was gone to basic training my brother started driving my car without my permission. He did a good job of totaling it and never did offer to help cover the damages. My second oldest sister still calls now and then but my next oldest sister, as well as my brother and younger sister all felt Mom owed them a living up until the day she died. Even at that they still would not help her when she needed it. With all that Laura has done for the family, I have to consider her the favorite.

I could do that if there's one here but you have to show up if you want any of it.

Bill:

We shall keep Laura in our prayers and wish her a speedy recovery. As for the favourite sister, I can understand and identify with that. Sometimes siblings leave much to be desired no matter how well they are raised up. Thankfully there is always at least one or two in a passel of kids that do understand and try to help mom and dad no matter what they have on their own plate.
