Are you a organ donor?

Postby Joe Malinowski » Sun May 06, 2012 7:26 pm

A close friend's brother died following a heart attack on Friday morning at the age of 55. He had some serious health issues for the past 15 years. A kidney transplant that lasted 12 years, which is the average, heart problems and diabetes. At the time of his death Mike was still a organ donor and from his skin and corneas between 30 and 40 people were helped. I also had a sister who benefited from a kidney transplant, her life was also extended for several years through the kindness of a organ donor. Most states allow you to sign up on line and you can specify that your organs may be used for transplant, research or both. If you are not a donor give it some thought please, and be sure your family is aware of your wishes. Thanks Joe

I signed up a number of years ago. I figure once I am tipped over I have no further use for them. Might as well put them to good use if possible.

Hopefully they will skip my bad parts, surely something will be useful. My mother had a liver transplant and it was a painful wait to get one.

Yup, it's on my drivers license. As much as I like going to a junk yard or scrap yard why not do the same thing with me, LOL.

Was at one time but have been advised that having cancer in the past, I can no longer donate blood or organs. I can donate organs but they won't use them so...... I do volunteer to assist at blood drives. (take out trash & set up and breakdown but at least it's a small help. Grump

I signed up to donate quite a few years ago. I've always felt it's the right thing to do.

Yes, yes, yes. Being an organ donor has the potential to literally save multiple lives. My wife died waiting for a liver. She was on the list for 19 months and never made it to the top because there are not enough people signed up to be donors.

BTW, Steve Jobs should never have received a liver transplant because he had cancer and was going to die of it, which he did.

in my profession, i see people on "the list" for a liver all the time. They are referred to me, months before they get they new liver. I put them through addiction treatment, with the hopes they no longer use. (If they had a problem that is). Said to say, 50/50 will return to use, and will be back in our office if they are lucky with an arrest. They remainder, usually die, because of compliacations. Always wondered how Larry Hagman got a liver. Man he looks bad.

I used to be on the list as well.... unfortunately I can no longer donate parts.... :( However I know and appreciate the need for donors and I wish more folks would sign the line or check the box -- there would be a lot less needless deaths. It is the right thing to do.
